Luke 11:9-13 (NKJV) “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
At what age do you stop asking? Think about it. We are trained not to ask. I am talking about personally. Most of us have no problem asking for another, especially if we feel there is just cause. However, when do you stop asking for yourself?
We think it is something we have to shoulder.
We think it is bothering something else.
We think since others do not step in and ask for us it must not be important.
We get tired of asking.
We think silence means no.
Children will ask until they have been taught not to ask. A child is dependent upon others. They can't reach the counter, so if they want something to drink they have to ask for someone to get it for them. If a child wants something they can't reach a toy, blanket or pacifier, they have to ask. If a child wants someone to hold them, what do they do? They hold up their hands and make a noise to get the person's attention. If a child wants food, they let someone know. If a child wants to go outside, they ask.
As they grow older it is the parents responsibility to teach the child to begin doing things they are old enough to do on their own, but what about the things they still need to ask for? Even though my son has a car and lives with us, he has to ask to go places. He is 19 and out of high school, so it isn't really that he needs to ask, but it is still a check point for him. We need to know where he is going to be and when he will be returning. Sometimes he needs to ask because he doesn't think about the questions that need answered. Or he doesn't think ahead for his responsibilities the next day. How late he stays out the night before can affect his attitude and productivity the next day.
Somehow in our growing up, we even stop asking God. We think if we can't do it on our own, it is not a possibility; therefore, we shouldn't do it. We may even scold ourselves for thinking such wild thoughts. So, why ask God for something beyond our ability or control. Somehow we forget God wants to be involved.
There are things in our life God wants to be a part of. He wants to bless us. He wants to be the answer, provide the answer, be acknowledged for being the hero in our time of need. Why do we stop asking God for things we know couldn't happen unless He gets involved? How can we be everything God dreamed we would be if we are not asking for the things that require His involvement? If God is necessary for the dreams to be come a reality, then we have to continue to live as a child and ask for those things that are out of reach.
What seems out of reach for you? Have you asked God? Are you still asking? According to the Scripture above in Luke 11, we are to ask and keep on asking… Are you? Are you still asking?
Father, this can be really difficult. Waiting for your yes, your move in a situation, can cause me to stop asking. I want to ask again but it seems like the answer is no. I trick my mind into thinking I shouldn't ask, but I know that doesn't go with Scripture. I pray You would strengthen me to be persistent in asking. There are specific things, relationships, resources, and intervention that I need. I know You are the only one who can make it happen. You are the only one who can open the doors. I ask for You to open the doors. I ask for endurance while I persist in asking. Forgive me for thinking a prayer unanswered must be a no. I will ask and keep on asking. You are my source of strength and I will call upon You in Jesus' name amen.
