Isaiah 64:8 (NKJV)
But now, O Lord,
You are our Father;
We are the clay, and You our potter;
And all we are the work of Your hand.
It is not very flattering to be called clay nor is it a term of endearment. It seems a little rustic, plain, and lacking in pizzazz. Nonetheless, it is one of the six relationship God offers us. As I study this relationship, Potter to clay, it is a relationship with God I am truly thankful for. I am glad I am not the person I was as a child. I rejoice that there is growth in my maturity and Christlikeness. I am glad I am not the person I was in my teens. There definitely were some pebbles of pride that were causing who I was becoming to crumble under the heat of life's problems. Then again in my early adult years, I was crushed under the decision of trying to live my life on my own wisdom. The Potter poured water over me and the dust began to soften and unite. He held me in His hands and placed me upon His spinning wheel once again to mold me into something that represented my Savior, my God. Since then, there have been many times I have fallen or felt like life dealt me another blow that shattered me. Each time the Potter came, crushed my broken pieces, poured water over me and began to re-mold me on His spinning wheel.
Why did He have to crush me after my fall? Because the pieces cannot be molded back together only the dust becomes moldable when water is added. Each time the Potter was removing another impurity within me and I was becoming stronger by the touch of the Master. His hands would flow around me and remove anything that did not belong. He would remove anything that would create a crack in the kiln of life. He was molding me into something that would serve a purpose to further His kingdom. I desire to be the vessel that will fulfill my destiny and hold the glory of God for all to see, draw near and receive.
The Potter to clay relationship is valuable in our being a vessel handcrafted by the Master to become all He desires we would be, to expand His kingdom here on earth. The Potter knows when we need to be molded for the next opportunity He has for us. We embrace and trust the Potter. He does not make anything with blemishes. He removes the blemishes or highlights them; so others will see He can use anyone no matter where they have come from or what they have done or not done.
We are more than clay. We are human beings with a choice. God does not force our crushing. He waits for us to be ready to have the things that are holding us back to want to be removed. We have to want God to crush us. He created us with love and love always offers a choice. God wants us to choose to be molded in His hands because we trust He will remove the imperfections, the impurties that will be exposed in the fire of life. He wants people to know He has put His hand upon us and the fire of life will not cause us to break. We will be made new and solid because of the touch of the Master. He is the Potter and we are the clay. To be molded by the Master we must trust Him in the crushing process. We must allow Him to remove things that will hold us back, cause us to stumble, or disregard His counsel. We must allow Him to remove fear, doubt, uncertainty. We must allow Him to remove pride, self-protection and personal knowledge. We must allow Him to remove selfish living. These things will only crack under the heat and break. When we allow the Potter to remove these things we are made new, a new creation in Christ. We are faithful, confident and certain, because of Christ in us. We think of others, trust God and listen for Holy Spirit to guide and direct. We lay our desires down and allow him to breathe upon the dreams He has placed within us. We agree to the hands of the Potter molding us into what He wants us to be. We fulfill the purpose He has placed upon us. We align ourselves with His ways and serve Him faithfully in our heart, mind, and body. We are willing to become what He has created us to be.
Father, thank You for the Potter and clay relationship. So many times I needed Your hands upon me. I was broken and needed crushing. I needed a new beginning. It wasn't going to happen if I remained laying where I fell. I needed You to finish the breaking so the impurities could removed from me. Thank You for caring for me enough to not give up on me, when I wouldn't let go of the things that were causing me to break under the fire of life. Thank You for pouring Your water to begin again in my life. You are amazing in all of Your ways. I will submit to You and allow Your hands to pick up the broken pieces and crush them to dust. It may hurt but it is worth it. I know You will make me new. I know You haven't given up on me. I know You will do something beautiful with me when I allow You to crush me. I receive Your water, Living Water upon me. You make me whole again. I will worship You for You are the Potter in my life and I Your clay in Jesus name amen.
