Warriors Arise: June 2nd, 2020
"So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so they did not know Him. And He said to them, "What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?""
Luke 24:15-17
Think back to the conversations you have had with others in the last couple of days. If Jesus were to join the conversation and ask the same question to you as He did to these men. How would you respond?
We know the end of history for Jesus and His disciples. We know that everything worked out according to God's plan of redemption for mankind. But what about the chaos and destruction we are in today?
How would you respond if someone joined the conversation and asked, "What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?" Here is my question, "Are you sad?" I see a whole lot of people angry but not really sure at what. Yes, it was wrong for an police officer to pin down George Floyd, especially to the point of death! I am not just sad but grieved by this. The officer is not only fired but in jail. And it is not going to go well for him or his family. In one moment he made a decision that will imprison him and his family will live with this disgrace for a very long time. George Floyd's family is grieving and have asked for people to pray not protest. They have ask for people to take a knee and bow their head not vandalize businesses, homes, and national monuments. Terrance Floyd, the younger bother of George was at the site where his brother was killed pleading with people to pray to stop this violence. He said that his family is not being violent "so why are you? Our family is praying."
So in the midst of their grief the Floyd family is having to try and stop the violence people say they are doing to support and bring justice to what happened to their family member, George Floyd. The Floyd family does not want any part of these protests to continue because it is a misrepresentation of their family and they do not want to be identified with it.
Does this make you sad? The protests are not honoring George Floyd because of those who choose to turn it into violence. How many innocent people have to loose their lives, loose their businesses, and their homes, and they can't blame it on COVID19 pandemic? And the dishonor of the vadalism on the WWI and WWII memorials! We are not a communist country because past men and women fought for our freedom. This is what happens when American history is not taught in schools. Kids grow up to be adults who dishonor the very country that gives them opportunity to have freedom.
If Jesus were to ask you, "What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?", what would you say? There is a family who is grieving for the loss of their family member, George Floyd. And they want to be distanced from the protests and violence. They have asked the people of America to take a knee and pray. They have asked, will you pray?
Father, I lift up my prayers with the Floyd family and ask for You to intervene. I ask for peace to come over every person in our nation. I ask for kindness to come. I ask for people to help restore and rebuild what the violence has taken away. Look at the ruin of America, how its people are destroying each other's livelihood. We need You to come and intervene. We need You to walk in among the protesters. I ask for each one who has come in peace to leave in peace. I ask that no one be persuaded to leave a peaceful protest and go participate in violence. I ask for You to be present with them and speak so they can hear. It is and was wrong for the police officer to pin George Floyd to his death. I ask for You to be with the police officer's family. No one will be there for them, so I ask for You to come and minister to each one. I pray for You to guide and direct them to a safe place where the children can grow up without fear or rejection. I ask for You to strengthen his wife who has filed for divorce because of her husband's actions. Even a divorce won't free her from the accusations that will come from people. How does she go forward unless You are with her. I ask for You to walk with her. I ask for You to step in and strengthen her. I pray wherever she goes, the people of the church will operate in mercy and kindness toward her and her children. I ask for the George Floyd and his family to be able to grieve. They should not have to be concerned with the people who want do evil all across America. They ask for prayer. I pray the people would hear their plea. I ask for people to respect their wishes. I pray for You to put a stop to the violence. The Floyd family knows justice will be done and they do not want any part of the protests nor the violence that follows to continue. I pray their request be honored by all people. I pray You would wrap Your arms around the Floyd family and the families of the police officers. Each one needs to know You will bring healing to their hearts and minds. I ask for You to come and heal the brokenness in each one's life in Jesus' name amen.
