Asking Jesus

Mark 14:53-61 (NKJV) And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were assembled all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes. 54 But Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. 56 For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree. 57 Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, 58 “We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’ ” 59 But not even then did their testimony agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” 61 But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?

They say, if you want to know the truth, ask the one who knows the truth. They have gotten Jesus away from those needing a miracle, healing or deliverance, the crowds and His disciples. He stands in an unauthorized trial. Sometimes it is best not to ask a question you do not want to know the answer to. Jesus knows where this is going. Sometimes is it best to keep silent, so as not to make matters worse. He knew they were going to get a whole lot worse, but there is not need to as gasoline to the fire already raging.

The high priest has had enough of the testimonies where they can't get two or more to agree. Therefore, by their own laws, they can't receive any of them. I wonder if Jesus is wanting to laugh at this exchange, this circus trial. He knows He has to hold it together because things have to happen according to Scripture, to fulfill Scripture. Have you ever been in trouble, knowing you were going to be disciplined but the way it was unfolding in front of you there was just something that struck you funny. You knew that you shouldn't laugh. You tried to hold it in and squelch it, but then the unthinkable, you laugh! Now things are really going to get ugly, "You think this is a joke? You think I can't discipline you? You think what you did wasn't hurtful, etc?" Oh man, now I am in trouble. Why did I laugh! That was not the right thing. I obviously didn't have it altogether like Jesus.

I am sure the high priest was fuming! They finally had Jesus but they can't get a conviction, because they do not have two testimonies that agree. He is in a pickle! So, he speaks directly to Jesus. Why not just get Jesus to confess without the agreement of the testimonies. And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” But He kept silent and answered nothing.

Jesus is not going to confess to something that isn't true. He also isn't going to answer until His Father tells Him to speak. Jesus remains silent. But then the high priest asks the right question. The Father has Jesus speak the truth.

Have you ever been so mad you asked a question you didn't want to ask? This is not the way things were supposed to go, but when emotions are running out of control its is what came out. The high priest took over the proceedings. He was going to muscle Jesus into confessing. But Jesus wasn't going to be muscled. He was going to speak when the right question was asked.

Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”

Oh yea! Let's get it all out on the table. Let everyone hear what Jesus is about to say. Let there be no mistake of what was going on right here in this confrontation.

Mark 14:62 (NKJV) Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

There is no turning back for Jesus. He had not intention of backing out. What was His reservation? Each one here would be condemned for what they did from this point forward. This was not a dance you wanted to be invited to, no matter how much you wanted to be one of the popular people, a person in the crowd, a person who saw first hand, hearing with your ears, seeing with your own eyes. They didn't even know that they were condemning themselves and yet, Jesus knew. Way back in the garden, He had already begun sweating droplets of blood for their sin. Could you imagine?

This blows my mind. Remember what He had told the Canaanite woman, "I was sent except to the lost sheep of Israel." These before Him were the lost of the lost yet they were supposed to be the one who were teaching the people to expect, watch, be alert for the Messiah. Yet, they were the blind leading the blind. They could not receive the one before for them.

I wonder how many of us have read the Bible, seen what God promises us, what He has done for others and struggle to believe God is here with us and offers us the same thing. I wonder what question you would ask? Are you wanting Him to explain why all the bad in the world is happening? Are you wanting Him to share how He heals, delivers, and who He blesses? What is the real question to ask? What is the question that will settle everything?

Mark 14:62 (NKJV) Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

Father, I settle today that You are God, the One who created Heaven and earth. You are the One who made a way out of my sin and the way for me to being Your child. You are the One who gives me strength when I am under attack. You are the One who walks with me through the fire. You are the One who is gloried when I stand against the accuser. You are the One whose love will never fail. You are my God and Jesus is my Christ, my Messiah, my everything. I will worship You and live to serve You all of the days of my life in Jesus' name amen.
