Backing DOWN!

Warriors Arise: September 27, 2023

Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.

Does that seem weird to anyone else? What does it mean to inherit the earth?

Let’s first look into what it means to be meek? Meekness is not being weak. Meekness is actually defined as strength under control. I used to have a sign hanging on my college dorm room wall. It read, “Meekness is backing down from a fight you know you could win.”

That statement may seem arrogant because it basically says I am right so why argue with ignorance. Most of the times we can't be corrected when we are busy defending ourselves. By backing down, there were numerous times I realized I wasn't right at all. Controlling my desire to defend myself allowed me to see from the other person's perspective. It made me a better listener and I realized I didn't have all the facts so the facts I was basing my opinion upon were not as foolproof as I thought.

I didn’t want to be a doormat nor did I want to always be living with the killer instinct, being competitive against teammates or in life off-the-field . Sometimes we can get so caught up in having to win or be right, we lose sight on valuing people. We can take the simple statement, “Win no matter what or at any cost," for which a coach meant to be as a team against the opponent. But, it shouldn't be an every day part of life nor in everything we do.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy winning. But I would rather have a friend after the game or conversation is over rather than someone who doesn't want to hang out again. Backing down from a fight you know you could win reveals far more strength and power than winning the discussion, argument or game that was meant just-for-fun.

Before we move on to "inherit the earth", let's evaluate ourselves. David asked the Lord, "Search me and see if there is any wicked way in me." This is a healthy ask or it could be a loaded gun. You could ask someone who you might realize is jealous or judgmental toward you and they would not have your best interest in mind when they respond. This is why David went to the Lord. He knew he could trust what God would say. He knew God wouldn't try to tickle his ears with puffed up words. He also knew God wouldn't rebuke him without cause. He knew God had his best interest in mind

David could trust God to speak to him. Throughout David's life, God had clearly directed his path countless times. Scripture records David being in several tight situations when "he turned and inquired of the Lord." David had learned to tune his hearing to the voice of God. God had led him out of many difficult situations. This time, David needed leading in a different way. He didn't want to be led by an enemy that might be within. His own heart might be deceiving him. He placed himself before God and let the Judge assess his heart. He knew God not only as the Judge but as loving and compassionate. He knew God had his best interest in mind.

David backed down and sought God's insight, correction and blessing.

Father, I want to submit myself before You. I ask for You to speak to my heart. I pray You would come. I desire to operate in meekness. So many times I think I am right when I am completely wrong but I can't see it because I am so set on what I think is right. I submit to You. I do not want to miss out on any relationships because I am unwilling to listen. Help me to hear as You do. I pray a friendship would blossom and we would be stronger in You because of You, in Jesus' name amen.
