Be Spontaneous

Warriors Arise: March 15, 2023

1 Chronicles 16:7-9 (NKJV) On that day David first delivered this psalm into the hand of Asaph and his brethren, to thank the Lord:

8 Oh, give thanks to the Lord!

Call upon His name;

Make known His deeds among the peoples!

9 Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him;

Talk of all His wondrous works!

Spontaneous worship: how many of you have personally engaged in spontaneous worship? Spontaneous, it wasn't planned or expected. Spontaneous means, performed as a result of a sudden inner impulse or inclination and without premeditation or external stimulus.

David is giving a command or at the very least encouraging the people to sing to God, "sing psalms to Him". After telling them who to sing to, he goes on to tell them what to sing about. Sing to God and sing about His wondrous works. I love that it ends with an exclamation mark. David is either giving a command or he is excited.

Maybe he sees others in the crowd who are about to burst with excitement, joy, peace, gratitude, and awe. Maybe he is speaking to them and encouraging them to go with it, go with the flow, just begin singing and allow yourself to express with words and melody what your heart is feeling.

There are times we miss the opportunity to spontaneously worship God. Do you need static sound? Are things too quite in the house so you have the TV or radio on? Maybe you can't keep your thoughts straight or maybe they dwell on the negative and you can't think on things that are noble and godly. Have you tried singing words of affirmation, gratitude and adoration to God? If you have, were you concerned about what it sounded like? If it is toward God, I am sure He was delighted. Without a doubt, I am sure He relished every sound and word. Especially when we can get so used to talking to God only to tell Him our problems and how the world is going to hell in a hand-basket. We should be praying the solution to the problems and we should be praying for governments to make godly decisions and for missionaries to be effective to reach every tribe and tongue with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. However, what about singing a spontaneous song to God? Without a doubt, I can say, this is not practiced enough. Mostly, because we are heavy laden with allowing our minds to focus on the negative and the incompletion of what God is doing verses acknowledging acts God has done and the hope of what He will do.

David instucts them to talk to God of the wondrous things He has done. If we aren't willing to acknowledge the wondrous things God has done then what do we have to sing about? And this is the problem. We have to make ourselves see God. Jesus said a number of times, "Let those who have ears hear and let those who have eyes see." He was talking about people who have ears and hear, but wouldn't receive what He was saying. He was talking about people who have eyes and see, but wouldn't believe what their eyes were seeing when it came to the miracles happening right before their eyes. What about you and I? Are you hearing what God is saying? Are you seeing what God has done?

Write down what you have heard God say this week.

Write down what you have seen God do this week.

Now, sing. Sing a spontaneous song about what you have heard God say and what you have seen God do.

It doesn't matter what anyone else says. It doesn't even matter if you like it. If it is the truth about what God has said, He will like it. If it is the truth about what God has done, He will be honored by your spontaneous song. Sing words, not notes, words of adoration to God.

Father, this is way outside my comfort zone, but I want to honor You. I want to sing songs of adoration and praise. I want to be overflowing with praise and gratitude. I want to lift my voice to You because Your love toward me is amazing. I will sing a new song. I will sing of the wondrous things You have done in my life. I will not overlook what You have done. I will praise You. I will pour out my heart of gratitude and thanksgiving in song. I will worship You in Jesus' name amen.
