Psalm 30:5d (NKJV) ...But joy comes in the morning.
Jesus is 7 days old. Mary is needing her sleep. She had been taking care of Jesus and Joseph has been trying find a place for them to stay, a more permenant place. Who knows how long it will take for them to be counted in the census. They need a place of their own. A place to themselves. A place to raise Jesus. But Mary needs sleep and I am guessing Joseph does too. I have heard a couple of new Dad's be thankful to go back to work because work is easier than being at home taking care of their newborn and their wife. Oddly, it makes me wonder why it doesn't occur to them that their wife will have to do everything herself now that he is no longer their to help. If they are so tired by this and the flee to their job that means theirs wife is left to take care of everything without him. God didn't just handpick Mary, He also handpicked Joseph. He knew who He wanted to be Jesus' earthly father. I have no doubt that Joseph was an excellent support and provider for Mary and Jesus.
There comes a point in parenting where we have a decision to make. Are we going to parent? Is that an odd question? Just because you are a parent doesn't mean you have decided to parent. Therefore, when you have a baby, you have a decision to make. How many of you know there is s difference in wanting children and becoming parents? We can love the idea of something but not have a clue about the things we are not seeing. We may think:
sure the baby will spit up, but I will have a burp cloth ready
I know there will be diapers but that can't smell that bad
without question the baby will sleep when I need to sleep
of course, our baby won't cry
absolutely, our baby will be the cutest
everyone knows our baby is satisfied all the time
our baby will set records winning the quiet game
when I need a break, the baby will go happily to the play pin
Being parents is one of those things NOBODY is ready for, even if you raise siblings or babysat a lot. It is different when your baby arrives and full responsibility is your own. Once the baby has broken through every idealistic idea you established as a monument in your mind, then you have the opportunity to step into reality and make become who you are to the baby. You are the baby's parent. You are the Father, the Mother. You have responsible not just to provide for the baby's needs but also nurture the baby's spirit, soul, gifting, talents, the call of God on their life. There are manners and respect, compassion and serving, along with responsibility and learning. Parenting is so much more than just having a baby. Once the baby is here you have the opportunity to embrace the role of parent and make the choice to become their Father, their Mother.
At this time, 7 days, the newness of the baby is over and they are settling into a routine. Mary is needing sleep and Jesus is probably starting to wake up more. They are becoming who they are to be for Jesus in the midst of being exhausted.
God asks us to do something for Him and we agree. It is easy to agree and say yes before we get in the trenches and start to do what needs to be done. However, it is a totally different story when we are doing everything that needs to be done to get it up and going, established and running smoothly. It would be years before Jesus would be up and going, established and "running smoothly". LOL!
Father, I want to become who I am designed to be. I want to embrace the responsibilities. I recognize I have no clue what it will look like nor what it will demand of me. I want to be willing to listen and learn so what You have asked me to do will fulfill the purpose for which You have given it into my hands. I pray no matter how difficult the responsibilities get, I will not buckle. I pray I will fulfill what You have put into my hands to do. I want my yes to be an eery day, every minute yes. I do not want to falter when I am tired and the pressure seems to have me at a breaking point. I want to trust You and walk in Your ways, following what You have given into my hands to do. Come lead me, I want to become who You have called me to be and do what You have called me to do, in Jesus' name amen.
