1 Samuel 18:3-4 (NKJV) Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. 4 And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt.

Jonathan was probably stunned just like everyone else who watched David take the battlefield with a shepherd's bag and a shepherd's staff. Then to have David talk with such authority and begin to run toward the giant must have brought all kinds of thoughts. However, if you turned to make a comment to the person at your side you might have missed the stone being released. The next thing you knew is that there was an resounding twack and a resounding thud as the giant's body bounced with such great force on the ground. If he can do that with a sling and a stone what would he do if he was a trained warrior with a sword?

Jonathan could only give David what he had. I am not sure if more people in Saul's army were equipped with a sword, armor, bow and belt. They may have acquired pieces of equipment after each battle they won; but back in 1 Samuel 13, no one but Saul and Jonathan were equipped with a warrior's gear.

1 Samuel 13:19-22 (NKJV) Now there was no blacksmith to be found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make swords or spears.” 20 But all the Israelites would go down to the Philistines to sharpen each man's plowshare, his mattock, his ax, and his sickle; 21 and the charge for a sharpening was a pim for the plowshares, the mattocks, the forks, and the axes, and to set the points of the goads. 22 So it came about, on the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan. But they were found with Saul and Jonathan his son.

There might not have been any other equipment. They didn't have an armory. Therefore, if Jonathan wanted to make sure David was trained well, then he made sure David had the best equipment to train with. If there were any others in the camp who had equipment it was because they had been in previous battles and pillaged the fallen warriors of their enemy. They had earned their battle gear. Jonathan didn't take from them; he gave his own. I do not think Jonathan went without. His father might not have seen the benefit of making sure David received battle gear; but he would make sure his son had it.

Has your child done something like this? My oldest will give away her jacket or shoes if someone is in need. If she has it and they need it, she will give hers to them. When I find out what she did, I can't undo it, but I make sure she has what she needs. I end up replacing whatever she gave away. Saul would not want his son to be without, especially, since there seemed to be another nation setting up battle lines as soon as one ended.

Whether Jonathan was ready for a new set of battle gear or not, he knew his dad would get him a set of battle gear. Maybe Jonathan already knew the following Biblical concept.

Luke 6:38 (NKJV) Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

We can become imprisoned by the things we have. There are times when we have been given something only to be in position to give it to someone else. We may delight in receiving it, but there may come a time when we are to be the giver. Too many times we will not pass along what we have been given therefore, the generosity of the Lord seems to stop. But God can only give to a vessel that is not full. A glass can only hold so much water. If the water is never used then He can't pour more water into the glass. We are to continually pour ourselves out. We are never to be imprisoned by what we have been given in all of our yesterdays. We are to receive and watch for how we are to use what we have been given or look to see who we are to give in to. We are never to sit on it, doing nothing with it.

Jonathan used his battle gear, but that day, a warrior appeared and he did not have any. That would not be the case again. David would be robed in Jonathan's battle gear. David would know how to wear it and use each weapon, BONUS! This was not part of the deal David had heard the men in the camp share. They said whoever defeated the giant would marry the king's daughter, his father's family would forever be free from taxes, and he would be given great riches. There was nothing mentioned about receiving his own battle gear let alone get the king's son's. That was an unexpected bonus!

Father, You desire for us to step into alignment with You. You want us to be prepared for the battle ahead. You want us to know the cost and the reward. When we step into taking down the giant, who seeks to take what You have given us, You will compel us to step into battle mode. Others will watch and want to give into our lives. They will see what we need. They will give what is theirs. They will receive from You. They may not get the exact thing they have given away, but You will fill their cup. You will not leave them empty or without. you will provide before the need arises. I pray I would be willing to give when I see a need in others. I pray I would give abundantly when I see a need. Jonathan didn't give David just a sword, he gave him all his battle gear. I want to release that kind of abundance to others. I want to give what I have been given from You. I know You will provide for me. I do not want to cling to what I have been given, when I see a need in someone else's life. I pray for a generous heart and confidence in the kingdom principle of sowing and reaping. I will receive from You and as You guide me, I will give to others in Jesus' name amen.
