But, I Heard You Say...

Warriors Arise: October 13, 2023

Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers,

For they shall be called sons of God.

Let's look at another side of being a peacemaker. I find the following set of verses a little humorous. Please do not misinterpret. It may take a few days to put this revelation together. Jesus says a phrase that we sing in church during Christmas celebrations, "Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinner reconcile..." and then I read the following.

Matthew 10:34-38 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword."

What?!?! Jesus didn't come to bring peace on earth?

This may seem contradicting other Scriptures. It is best to leave them in the context in which they were written. God NEVER contradicts Himself. It may seems like contradiction to what we know at the time. However, if I do not understand something, I yield to God being God. He knows all and I am human and I do NOT know all.

In the garden, when Judas has betrayed Jesus, Peter pulls a sword and cuts off the chief priests captain. Jesus rebukes Peter with the following in Matthew 26:52-54.

But Jesus said to him, Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?”

I can only imagine what Peter was thinking. "You said, "I did not come to bring peace but a sword and now you are saying to put my sword away because if I use it, I will die by it. Master, I do not understand.""

It can be difficult to keep up with God's thinking. Therefore, we listen and learn.

The battle had already been fought. Peter had been asked twice to join the battle. "Pray with Me." It was fought while Peter sleeping. Jesus had asked Peter, James and John to fight in prayer ("the battle is not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers of darkness in the heavenly places") while Jesus was pouring out drops of blood over the inner battle that was going on in His body. He needed to make sure He didn't die before He made it to the cross. He had to fulfill Scripture. He needed His body not to wear out. He needed the mob to not take matters into their own hands. He needed the guards to not kill Him while they watched Him. He needed the torturer to not drain Him of too much life with the cat of nine tails. He had to make it to the cross. His body needed to last until He got to the cross.

There was no other way. Jesus had fulfill Scripture. He had to be betrayed. He had to be beaten, caned, whipped 39 times, and walk the bloody path to Golgotha. He had to die on the cross. He had to do this without a sword. There would be no battle with the sword. The battle would be to stay alive until He got to the cross.

Jesus had to operate in perfect peace throughout this monstrosity of a night! How else did He keep silent? How else did He not call on the 12 legion of angles? How else did He lay down His life? He was in perfect peace. He knew the Father's plan. He knew He had to land the final blow to the enemy. He was in perfect peace and the enemy didn't even see what was coming.

This was not the night to fight with a metal sword. It was a night to remain in perfect sync with the Holy Spirit and abide in the peace of the Father's plan. In less than a day, the victor would declared. This war was won because Jesus operated in perfect peace.

Father, I ask for You to give me perfect peace. I desire to operate in Your peace that surpasses all understanding. You are amazing in all of Your ways. I need Your wisdom to know when I need to keep silent and move through the plan, knowing that victory is Your's when I reach the fulfillment of Your plan. You will teach me peace. I will slip through the hands of the enemy because I will be cloaked in peace. In the end, the enemy will be silenced and Your will be gloried in Jesus' name amen.
