1 Chronicles 16:1 (NKJV) So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tabernacle that David had erected for it.
1 Chronicles 15:1 (NKJV) David built houses for himself in the City of David; and he prepared a place for the ark of God, and pitched a tent for it.
Later on in Scripture, we know David wants to build a "brick and mortar" building for God. He wants to build the temple of the Lord, but at this time, David didn't have any plans to do so. David was going by the book, God's book, written by Moses. He might have wanted to build a temple, but is that what God wanted? I don't think he was going to deviate from what Scripture says because of what happened to Uzzah. Uzzah died because they did not carry the ark of the Lord, as instructed in Scripture.
David had done His research about how the ark of the Lord was to be carried. He knew about the tabernacle, tent made in the wilderness. He might not have wanted to change things, at least not yet. I am sure there was a little fear and trembling. He didn't want to be struck dead like Uzzah for not following God's directions, nor did he want any more of his fellow Israelite brothers struck down. Right now, he would go by the book, God's book.
He had no indication that God wanted a brick and mortar building as His new home. He wasn't about to bring God to a home, He didn't want. He would follow the book.
As David was researching how to carry the ark of the Lord, he would have come across the specific instructions God had given Moses on building the Tabernacle of the Lord in the desert. If that is where He wanted to reside then that is where he would take Him. David would follow the Book and bring Him home. He would bring Him to the place He wanted to be.
Do you live your life by the book? I do not want us to get legalistic. However, I do want to encourage each one of us to look to God's Book, to Scripture, before we try to do things our own way. God has a way. He generally uses His Word and Holy Spirit to guide and direct us in the things He has called us to do.
There is s freedom given through God's Word, the Bible. There is no need to recreate the wheel when God already has the wheel for us. We do not need to come up with more laws like the Pharisees did nor be argumentative like the Saducees. God has set up healthy boundaries for our protection, provision, and authority. They are to bring us delight, peace, wisdom, and joy. They are not to be a prison.
The Bible gives us a picture of God's love toward mankind, Jesus brings us redemption and authority, and Holy Spirit brings conviction and counsel. To live by the book:
Have you received God's love in your life?
Have you embraced the redemption Jesus died to give you?
Do you live in the authority Jesus has given you?
Do you recognize the conviction of Holy Spirit?
Do you seek and listen to the counsel of Holy Spirit?
Being able to say, "Yes," to these every day would reveal that we are saying "Yes" to living by the Book, God's Word, the Bible.
Father, I seek You today. I desire understanding of Your Word. I want to develop a lifestyle of seeking You and listening to what Holy Spirit says. I want to receive the love You have for me. I receive the authority Jesus has given me. I will submit to You, stand my ground, resist the devil and he will flee. Even though it is difficult to be called out for my sin, I submit to Holy Spirit to convict me of my sin. I do not want to misrepresent You. You are my God and I want the world to know about You. It starts with me, right here, right now. I seek You for the council of Holy Spirit. I pray to be guided by Him and walk the path You have laid before me, in Jesus' name amen.
