Came Upon Them

Warriors Arise: October 22, 2022

1 Samuel 19:18-20 (NKJV) So David fled and escaped, and went to Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and stayed in Naioth. 19 Now it was told Saul, saying, “Take note, David is at Naioth in Ramah!” 20 Then Saul sent messengers to take David. And when they saw the group of prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as leader over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.

God will protect you. When the enemy is coming after you, God will protect you. It might have something to do with David knowing who to go to. It wasn't that he went to Samuel, but he went to the man who prophesied over him, the man who he knew to hear from God, the man who would teach him or at least encourage him to get into the presence of God. Later in Scripture we read of David, over and over again, "He inquired of the Lord." I wonder if it started here.

Why was it so easy for the messengers, the deputies sent from Saul to prophesy as Samuel and the prophets were doing?

Could it be because they were already seeking God before the messengers arrived?

Could it be because the presence of the Lord was surrounding them like a shield?

Could it be because Samuel was in the stronghold of the Lord, like an invisible shield and when the messengers came close they too were in the presence of God, the God bubble and their behavior was no longer their own?

God came upon the messengers, because they came within close proximity of Samuel and the prophets who were already in the presence of God. It isn't so much that God came upon them, but they came within the atmosphere where God was; therefore, they too would be effected by the presence of God. In His presence they would see clearly, they would hear clearly, and they would know God's will in this particular situation. For some reason they are not able to lay hands on David and take him back to Saul. Something changed when the when the Spirit of God came upon them.

We are not to fear the Spirit of God. The messengers didn't die. They didn't get a disease. They didn't go blind. They prophesied. We can be so afraid to get close to God, to His people who are prophesying, declaring His word. We can step back. We may even turn away, because we do not want the Spirit of God to come upon us. There is nothing to fear when the Spirit of God comes upon us. It should be something to pursue. In that moment, we are completely in alignment with God. We understand God. We know God in a way we haven't know Him before.

Father, I thank You for this example. I want to know You. I want to understand You. I want to be in complete alignment with You. Therefore, I must walk toward You, embrace You, and allow Your Spirit to come upon me. I will pursue You, because in the moment Your Spirit comes upon me, all things are made true, clear, and plain. I will know You will and embrace what You have revealed to me. I desire to know You and walk in Your ways. I will pursue You and allow Your Spirit to come upon me, lead me and teach me of Your ways. I will be in alignment with You in Jesus' name amen.
