1 Samuel 17:43-44 (NKJV) So the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 And the Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!”
I kind of wonder, if David laughed. He knows there is only one God. He knows the Philistine has no god who hears or responds. Maybe he didn't laugh out loud, but at the very least he probably smirked. The battle began before David even stepped onto the battle field.
Have you seen the video where one man is playing several games of chess at one time. He makes a move then moves to the next table while his opponent makes his play. David played his first chess game with his oldest brother and won. Then he played the chess game with Saul. Now, he was beginning another game with this Philistine.
David made the first move, when he walked onto the battle field. For 40 days the Philistine had invited anyone from Saul's camp to fight him. He had sneered, jeered as he laughed at them and called out blasphemous things against God. David had entered the game when he walked onto the battlefield. When boys play, even if it is a game in the park, a pick up game of basketball or touch football, they will eventually start talking smack. Why do they do this? It is a power move. If they can intimidate their opponent with words, they have the advantage. From active sports to card games some people shouldn't play, because they can't keep from talking smack or accusing their opponents of cheating. However, if we had a little tougher skin and could handle the verbal game as well as the game of skill from sports to card games; then we would understand the game is more than the activity. The game makes us stronger, because we do not allow the smack talk or accusations to affect our steadiness in the game. This is the mental part of the game. When we can win the mental battle we will come out ahead in the physical battle. David had to be able to handle the verbal smack the Philistine was speaking so he could remain focused in accurately using his skill to fight.
Not only did the Philistine go on and on in his verbal attack, the Bible doesn't even record all that he said. Finally, he gets done and even invokes his gods, who can't hear or see, because they are non-existent, and calls for David to come fight him.
The enemy starts the game before way before any hand-to-hand battle. He always tries to mess with your mind first. If he can defeat you in your mind then he can defeat you in battle. There is no power in what the enemy is saying, unless you give it power. The Philistine's words are meaningless, like the gods he called upon. Stop being defeated by the words of the enemy.
Father, I have given too much power to the enemy. He hounds me with fear and discouragement, with unworthiness, and weakness. I ask to be renewed in my mind. I ask to recognize when the battle has begun. I want to think through and hear You lead me to making the next play. I want to be completely in alignment with You. You are my God and I will not allow the words of the enemy to land on me. I will let them fall to the ground, with no effect upon me. I will remember they are powerless; therefore I will give them no power. I will play the game, enter the battle, and move through the battle with You. I am Yours and I will believe what You say. I will keep my mind focus on the strategy You have given to fight the enemy. I will win because I am submitted to you and the enemy is going down in Jesus' name amen.
