Define Compassion

Warriors Arise: October 4, 2023

Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful,

For they shall obtain mercy.

The first definition of merciful and mercy in this verse is compassion. Several years ago I felt the Lord sent me on a mining excursion to get the understanding of compassion. After all, God tells us in Proverbs we are to Get Wisdom! Get Understanding! If He tells us we can get it then we can have it. It isn't that we can't understand or have wisdom, it is a matter of if we will put for the effort to get understanding and wisdom.

After studying multiple Scriptures on compassion, a couple of things stuck out. Compassion is a very similar to agape. Just like there are four Greek words to define love:

  1. Friend love

  2. Brotherly love

  3. Romanitc love

  4. God's uncontidtional love (Agape)

We can only operate in the fourth form of love, agape, if we are operating from a position in Christ. It is unconditional, no matter what they have done or didn't do, you love them. You will not have any angst against them or despise them for any reason. Compassion and agape are not the same thing, but they are both motivated by godly character and likeness to God's character.

  1. Pity

  2. Sympathy

  3. Empathy

  4. Compassion (godly characteristic)

In the Scripture for today, the first definition of mercy is compassion. Compassion is not only feeling what others are feeling, but you understand how you can help them and are motivated to help them.

In the following Scripture is seems that verse thirty six would be before thirty five. However, when I was studying compassion, I was overwhelmed by Jesus' love, agape. He had already been doing the ministry of His Father's. Jesus was human. He had to be tired, but what kept Him going? What gave Him heavenly tenacity to keep going?

I believe it was compassion. He wasn't just doing the work of His Father because His Father wanted Him to, He was doing the work of His Father, because Jesus, Himself, was moved with compassion for the people. Their state of life was heartbreaking and He could do something about it. So, he drew from compassion and pressed on to reach each one who came to Him.

Matthew 9:35-36 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.

Father, I find myself doing what I see You doing. I want to have a heart like Jesus expressed in this passage. He was already doing the work You had put into HIs hands to do. He was setting the people free and preaching Your love. He was demonstrating Your love. However, it became real to Him when He was moved with compassion. I believe that it when it became His mission and not just from obedience to honor You. I want to minister from the point of compassion. I love You and desire, above all, to do as You are doing and what You have called me to do. However, I want to do it being filled to overflowing with compassion in Jesus' name amen.
