Matthew 3:16-17 (NKJV) When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Did Jesus cry tears of joy? He hadn't seen His Father is thirty years. God shows up at His baptism. His Father didn't miss His baptism. This is major. We do not see God speaking to Jesus before this. It has been over thirty years, since He had spoken. Jesus came to John and knew He was to be baptized. Then His Father showed up. His Father doesn't let anything keep Him from being at His baptism. Obviously, this was important.
There is something so special about this event. Jesus heard His Father's audible voice for the first time since He came to earth. Jesus led a perfect life and after thirty years His Father spoke to Him. Out of all the things He did right and this time God couldn't contain His joy. He had to make Himself known. He had to let everyone who was there know, "This is My Beloved Son..."
How long had Jesus wanted to hear His Father's voice again? All these years, He had done the right thing and He heard nothing, at least nothing that was recorded, from His Father. Now, His Father speaks. He speaks such beautiful, empowering words. I don't know about Jesus, but I know I would cry, tears of joy and tears of awe. There would be tears of peace and tears of fullness.
God speaks to each one of us. Most of the time we aren't listening and when we do hear His voice, we play it off as a fleeting thought, a strange notion, and crazy idea. Most of the time we are not receptive to God speaking to us. Most of the time, we miss what we are not expecting. Jesus was here on a mission. He was waiting for God to let Him know He was doing the right thing. He was fully submitted to God. Scripture tells us He only did what He saw the Father doing. Nothing meant more to Jesus than being a part of what His Father was doing. It was His focus. Now that He heard His Father's voice and the affirmation and empowerment that came from them just might have caused Him to cry. Finally, His Father spoke and He heard Him.
Father, I pray my ears would be open to listening to Your voice. I pray I would be sensitive to Your voice. I pray my heart is set upon You and my mind is positioned to join You. I pray I would receive Your words of affirmation. I pray I would be encouraged and empowered by Your words spoke to me. I look to You and listen. When I do not hear Your voice, I will remain faithful to do what is right in Your eyes in Jesus' name amen.
