Matthew 4:18-19 And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Had they heard of Jesus? Jesus was no longer in Nazareth, He was in Galilee. Did word travel to them? Think about what is happening. I realize the Bible couldn't possibly hold everything going on every second. Think about how this is laid out. Jesus walks by the Sea of Galilee and watches two brothers casting a net into the sea. Then He calls to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."
I can picture Simon shouting to Andrew, "Did you hear what I heard? What kind of nonsense is that? What does that even mean, "I will make you fishers of men? No one fishes for men, you fish for fish." They weren't looking for a new job. Men didn't change jobs, they worked the job their father taught them. I am guessing since Simon and Andrew are brothers, their father had passed and they are running the family business.
Who had even heard of a job being "fishers of men"?
What is that job?
What do you do?
How do we get paid?
What are the hours?
Those of us who have read more of the Bible, know what Jesus was asking. However, think back in your own life. Do you remember a time when Jesus walked by, you might not have recognized it as Him when it was happening, but you heard about or began to dream of doing something that was not in alignment with what you were already doing?
Did you investigate or get a little bit more information?
Did you eventually make the shift and go do it?
In Isaiah, he shares a perspective of God we need to keep in mind, "My thoughts are not your thoughts. My ways are not your ways…" Then we have Jesus who shares throughout His ministry, "Let those who have ears hear." We can't think God thoughts until God shares with us what He is thinking. At that time, we will need to have ears to hear so we will align with what God is saying.
Have you heard God call to you?
Was there a struggle to leave what you were doing to join Him?
Did you follow Him?
Father, I want to to hear You call to me, "Follow Me". I want to be ready. While I am waiting, I want to be faithful to do what I do now. When you come and call to me, I want to be willing to follow even if I have no idea how it is going to work out. I want to walk in step with You. I pray I would be diligent in what I do know. I pray I would recognize when Your voice calls out to me and follow You immediately. I pray I would have complete faith that you will take care of the things I cannot comprehend and the needs in my life and my family in Jesus' name amen.
