Did You Swear?

Warriors Arise: November 17, 2023

Matthew 5:33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’

I wonder if this is where courts got the idea to swear witness in with their hand on the Bible before there were questioned? Maybe they thought it would cause people to remember this verse when testifying. If they remembered, then people weren't going to lie to the court.

Is this verse about swearing? It is actually about not swearing falsely. Not that we should have a reason to swear. Generally, when people swear they either can't communicate so every other word out of their mouth is a some kind of cussing. Secondly, people swear because they are so mad they think swearing makes a bigger point.

I have never felt empowered when I swear. I have a swearer's remorse. It is a little comical. I remember getting so upset that I cussed and then afterward, I said, "Well, that wasn't worth it". Instead of making me feel powerful, it made be feel weak because I had allowed myself to run off at the mouth in my frustration and anger. There was no satisfaction in swearing. I thought too myself, "Why did I do that?! Now, I have to repent." I was a mess! I apologized to God and to my children. They didn't do something I specifically had told them to do a hundred and one times and I blew a gasket.

However, this verse is not about swearing. It is about making sure we do not give false testimony. We are to give an accurate account what we saw or did. We are not to make up something and lie. We are to tell the truth. The truth is what honors God. When asked, it is our responsibility to the Lord to give the truth.

Father, I ask for You to come and minister to me. I want my words to be true. I do not want to lead people astray through lies and useless swearing. I pray to be honest in my record of what I saw and experienced. I pray I would honor You by giving an accurate report in Jesus' name amen.
