1 Samuel 19:20-23 (NKJV) Then Saul sent messengers to take David. And when they saw the group of prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as leader over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. 21 And when Saul was told, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. Then Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also. 22 Then he also went to Ramah, and came to the great well that is at Sechu. So he asked, and said, “Where are Samuel and David?”
And someone said, “Indeed they are at Naioth in Ramah.” 23 So he went there to Naioth in Ramah. Then the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on and prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah.
Scripture does not tell us if Saul knew the messengers he sent three different times had actually returned to Saul. However, I would think Saul would have gotten word as to what happened to them. They weren't killed, but one might think they were captured. They were under the influence of the Spirit of God. They were prophesying with the prophets of the Lord. While Saul was getting the information at the well, I think he would have found out what happened to his men.
Sometimes we can think we are above God. When Saul rejected God, he didn't realize the grace and mercy God had been extended to him. There are times when God says, "You don't have dominion here." This is what happened to Saul. Yes, God made him king of Israel, but that doesn't mean he was above God. God is still supreme. When Saul pursued David and Samuel to Naioth in Ramah, he entered God's dominion. In God's domain Saul would being doing what someone does under the influence of the Spirit of God, prophesy. Did Saul think it would be different? Did he think he was above God? Did he think God would allow him to do whatever he wanted? Maybe Saul thought he was so far from God, since he rejected following His leadership, that God wouldn't draw near to him. Therefore, he thought he can do whatever he wanted.
How many of us have been in that situation? Before you think, "I would never!" - think again. I can't speak for everyone, but there isn't anyone I know who hasn't rejected God at some point in life and thought God wouldn't come near them. God cares too much for us. If we come near Him. He speaks to us and even through us. In prophesying, Saul would know God's heart and intentions. In prophesying, Saul would know God's presence. In prophesying, Saul would have uttered what God wanted to have happen.
Each group of messengers sent and Saul himself then knew what God desired. When the Spirit of God came upon them, there was no mistake. The words came out of their mouth and they the light had come into their darkness. Light invaded darkness when they came into the presence of the prophets and prophesied before God. The darkness in their mind, the darkness in their soul, the darkness in their heart was exposed, when the Spirit of God came upon them and they prophesied. The truth was revealed.
If you want to know God's heart over a matter then seek Him, step into His presence, invite Him to fellowship with You, make yourself available, remove all barriers between you and God. Seek God. Speak the Word of God. Know the truth and the truth will set you free. Why do we fear being free? Prophecy according to 1 Corinthians 14 is for the edification, encouraging and comforting God's people. We all could use a word from God through prophesy.
Maybe Saul didn't expect a different result. Maybe he was positioning himself in the presence of God, because he thought he was right. He wanted to hear for himself regarding God's direction and what to do. Maybe he thought he was so right in his actions against David that he willingly pursued God to be verified. God did meet him. God did speak to him. God did speak through him. God did reveal the darkness and light prevailed. The darkness in Saul didn't quench the light revealed through the prophets and Samuel.
When you want to know the truth, you will pursue God. He will reveal the truth.
Father, I do want to know the Truth. I am positioning myself before You. I pray my heart is open to respond to You. I pray I my mind will be corrected by Your light. I pray my words will be cleansed by You. I desire to encourage Your people. I desire to use my words to bring comfort to others. I desire to break the bonds of darkness and bring the light into the lives of others. Come, Holy Spirit and minister to the darkness within me. Come and expose anything that does not align with God's will and His ways. Come and bring forth the truth, so I am set free. In Your presence, I know Your amazing love for myself and others. I will not hinder Your call on someone's life. I will encourage them to pursue You and walk in Your ways. I will bless what You have called them to do. I will lift Your name up and bring glory to Your name. I will honor You and Your ways in Jesus' name amen.
