Psalm 27:1a (NKJV) The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
Genesis 1:1-4 (NKJV) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.
One of the first things we fear in life is darkness. I have a little one who seems to be fearless until the lights go out. When it is dark she won't go into a room or down a hallway even if she has been into that room a thousand times in the daylight hours or down the hallway when the light were on. Her fear of darkness grips the courage within her and holds her captive. We are teaching her Jesus is the light within her that gives her courage in the darkness around her.
I would like to draw a parallel from Genesis 1:2 and Psalm 27:1. When we are born into this world, we are born into sin and darkness. God looked at us being without form, and void; and darkness was upon us. He brought the Light, the Lord is our light. However we have to receive the Lord for His light to be in us. Before we confess our sin, we are in darkness. Before we recognize Jesus as Lord and Savior, we are void. Yes, we exist. We live, breathe, and function in this world, but we are aimless being pushed to and fro not knowing where we are to go. We can't see where we to go, who we are to become, or what we are to do. Sure, we can go anywhere we want, we can become whomever we want, we can do whatever we want, but without Jesus as the Light of life we are doing these things in the dark. Nobody can hit a target in the dark. God created each one of us with a purpose, a destiny to fulfill. We can't hit that target, our God-given destiny without Jesus as our Light.
Just as God saw the earth being without form, so are we when we are born. We have a sinful nature, we are in darkness. We operate off of learned knowledge but not the wisdom of the Lord nor the leading of the Holy Spirit. We need the Holy Spirit to hover over us so we can see the Light, which is Jesus. When we see the Light we have a choice to receive the Light. God spoke and the Light came upon the earth. When darkness hovers around, position yourself to hear God speak over you. Those who are saved, who have confessed their sin and made Jesus their Lord and Savior will hear God speak over the void within and the darkness that surrounds them. The Light of Christ will resonate within. It will bring clarity to their mind and visibility to their eyes. Things they couldn't see before, they can see now. They see because Jesus is the Light of their life, in their life, and within their life.
When we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He is also the Light of our life; therefore, God divides the light from the darkness. It is a supernatural phenomenon when we receive Jesus. It is why people see more clearly, confusion is gone, and have a focus. They know what they need to do, have a resolve to accomplish what is before them and overcome the barriers that stand in their way.
A Christian can still be in the dark and not know how to tap into, turn on the Light of Jesus within them. He is always there; He is Emmanuel; God with us. I have had to face some giant fears this past year and they intensified in the last couple of months. When darkness tries to surround me and snuff out my light, I have learned to position myself before God. He will speak to me just as He did to the earth that was void. He will command there to be light and I will see. He will separate the light from the darkness, the truth from the lies, the possible from the impossible. Because nothing is impossible for God. All things are possible for those who believe. We believe because we call on Emmanuel, to shine within us, bring clarity to our mind and purpose to what we put our hand to.
Have you operated a dimmer switch? This switch has a slide or turn knob. Once you turn it on you can determine how bright you want the light to be. We are the ones who determine how bright Jesus will be in our lives. Every time we position ourselves in His presence and learn from Him, we turn the knob and the light gets brighter, we see clearer, darkness is pushed further way, and we see the target. When we see the target, we know the direction we are to focus our efforts. Fears are exposed in the light. They are overcome by our willingness to face them because of the Light of Christ within us.
Father, I come before You to worship Jesus. He is the Light in my life. Today, I turn up the Light. I want to expose the fears that paralyze me. I want to see the the lies and overcome them with the truth. I have Emmanuel with me because I am a believer. I celebrate in the Light, who was born to give us light. He is not in my pocket or purse. He is in my life, within every fiber of my being. He is the wiring connected to the dimmer knob. I turn up the Light so I can see clearly. You are forever my Light. I will protect the knob and position myself in Your presence when things see confusing. I want to expose the lies hidden in the darkness and face them with the Lord of my life, the Light of my life in Jesus name amen.
