Do I Have to Do this Myself?

Warriors Arise: October 26, 2022

1 Samuel 19:18-22 (NKJV) So David fled and escaped, and went to Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and stayed in Naioth. 19 Now it was told Saul, saying, “Take note, David is at Naioth in Ramah!” 20 Then Saul sent messengers to take David. And when they saw the group of prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as leader over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. 21 And when Saul was told, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. Then Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also. 22 Then he also went to Ramah, and came to the great well that is at Sechu. So he asked, and said, “Where are Samuel and David?”

Don't you know Saul was probably fuming! "Can't anyone follow instructions? All I am asking is for someone to go get David and bring him to me!" Saul sent messengers three times and none of them returned with David. I am sure you have heard the saying, "If it is going to get done right then I am going to have to do it myself." Saul is tired of waiting, just like most of us would have been. He sets out to lay hold of David himself.

There are times when we can't tell someone else to do something that we need to do. I believe this was a set up for Saul. It wasn't about the three sets of messengers. It was about getting Saul to a place where God could speak to him. It was about Saul receiving another opportunity from God to make things right. It was about getting Saul in the position where he was in the presence of God. He had fair warning. He knew what happened to the three groups of messengers he sent to get David. He knew they had been overcome with the Spirit and prophesied. He knew he would be pursuing David and Samuel who were in the presence of God. This was a set up for Saul to experience God. Had Saul seen what God was offering, he might have responded differently when the chase was over.

God is incredibly merciful. I believe when we return to God, He restores us and sets our feet upon the path He has for us.

  • If Saul had embraced this opportunity I believe the distressing spirit would have left him for good.

  • If Saul had repented for his arrogance, he would have seen the value of Samuel and restored him as his counselor.

  • If Saul had taken note of what was happening, he would have listened to what was being prophesied instead of disregarding God and ruling God's people without Him.

Yes, Saul needed to do this himself. God was giving Saul another chance to repent and be restored. God is so gracious. He desires to see us return to the fullness of what He has for us. He sets us up to commune with Him. We pursue a matter or person for our own reason, but God has His own purpose. He desires to restore us to the destiny He has placed within us.

Father, You are amazing. Your love astonishes me. I stand in awe of You and Your ways. So many times You have set me up. I headed out with the wrong intentions and on the way You met me. Thank You for meeting me. Thank You for turning my heart around. Thank You for reminding me of who You are: Your goodness, Your kindness, Your power, Your love, Your redemption, and the restoration You do in my life. You are amazing. I will praise You. You try to turn me toward Your purpose and Your will. I will align myself with You. I will be sensitive to Your leading. I will embrace Your calling upon my life. I will not seek to harm others. I will position myself to empower others to reach their full God-given potential. I will speak words of life and love in Jesus' name amen.
