Do You Know the Cry?

Warriors Arise: December 30, 2021

Luke 2:6-7 (NKJV) So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger,

What the vice president of the hotel chain said has resounded in my mind on several different occasions, just because I wore the name tag that said General Manager, doesn't mean I knew everything there was to know about being a General Manager. I found out the same concept worked in marriage. Just because I said I do, does meaning I know everything there is to know, about being the wife my husband needed. But the time that I felt where it applied the most, was after giving birth to our firstborn. Having a baby made me a parent, but it didn't mean that I instantly knew what to do as a parent, even more so, as a mom.

My three months of training to earn the tag that said General Manager gave me a grasp of the work detail over each job in the hotel and the paperwork I would be doing, but the people skills comes with practice. Why is that? Because every person responds differently and needs the solution to their problem. The better I became at solving problems or at least heading them off before they became a problem, was the real strength of a solid General Manager.

As a parent, it isn't about what I know or don't know. Every situation is different and every child is different. Being a good parent means I come into a situation with a clear mind, no preconceived ideas, and ready to listen. I needed to hear what they said as well as what they didn't say. Just like when a baby cries. We learned a baby has several different cries. Their tone, depth, and length of cry changed depending on what was wrong. When Scott and I read this in a book, we weren't sure. However, as we listened, we learned; therefore, we knew how to respond accurately. Isn't that true for most relationships and situations in life? If we will listen, we will learn; therefore, we know how to respond accurately.

Mary and Joseph were learning the different cries Jesus gave. Sure, they became parents when Mary gave birth; however, being parent takes investment, time and energy. In the beginning, until you learn their cries, their signals for needing you, there is a huge learning curve.

Just as Mary and Joseph had to learn Jesus' cry, we have to learn when God speaks to us. He desires for us to understand His ways and His will. He yearns for us to embrace the fullness of being who He created us to be so we can fulfill the destiny within us. God wants to be able to direct our path. That means we have to hear when He is speaking to us. Our willing heart will compel us to fulfill what God has spoken. Every parent has a decision with how they are going to parent their children. God sees it as either raising them to honor and be in relationship with Him or not. The not is really big. It isn't just the world's way, following the devil and his demons; but also a watered down version of Christianity can be even more harmful. Why is that? Because a watered down version of Christianity is teaching Christ without relationship or understanding of God's love. Without relationship, we lack the possibility of understanding God's love. I am not saying you will understand every decision God makes but with relationship you will trust every decision God makes.

Mary and Joseph had to begin to understand what baby Jesus needed. They intently listened, watched and responded accordingly. What if we were that way in our relationship with God? We totally realized Jesus is in the room with us, Emmanuel; therefore, we listened for Him and heard every little cry. What if we could identify His voice so precisely that we knew exactly what He wanted us to do? Do you know the type of cry our Savior cries out for you right now?

Father, I position myself to know You. I quiet my mind from all the thoughts running around and I release peace to my mind. What You are saying, the cry of Your heart and what You want me to do will bring peace to the thoughts running in my mind. I will not allow my mind to run amuck with thoughts that only increase stress and empower confusion. I will remove them and learn You voice, Your cry and know how to respond. I will respond accordingly, in Jesus' name amen.
