Warriors Arise: March 23, 2024
Matthew 8:13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour.
I've got to let this soak in. I need to fully understand what Jesus is saying and what has happened. I'm not sure I truly understand authority. When Jesus interacts with people, He gives us clues.
Jesus marvels at the centurion's faith. His occupation allows him to understand authority. He doesn't see there being anything different when approaching Jesus. He understands Jesus is able to do what He does because He has been given authority. It is matter-of-fact. None of his soldiers would question his instructions or authority. They would do what he has said or it could mean their life or affliction to come. The soldiers were to do exactly as the centurion directed.
The centurion aligned what he knew of authority with how Jesus could do what He did. He knew Jesus was far greater than himself. This is why he didn't want Jesus to come into his house. It didn't feel worthy. He had a holy reverence for Jesus. Jesus gladly chose to come. He said He would come. But, the centurion also knew Jesus had so much more to do. A busy person in authority knows that the job is never done. There is always more to do. He understood Jesus didn't need to come to his house to do this one act. He knew he only needed the word of Jesus, the command from Jesus. He knew when Jesus said it would happen, it would happen.
Jesus told him to go and the centurion didn't ask again, he didn't make sure Jesus understood his request, and he didn't go away questioning his personal value, position, unworthiness. He went trust Jesus. If he were to give that word, it would be done. He knew Jesus as a man of supreme power from God. He knew when He said, "as you have believed, so let it be done for you,” it was done.
What are your prayers like? Do you go away still questioning Jesus? Do you go away thinking you shouldn't have bothered Jesus about "that" request? Do you go away wondering what possessed you to be so bold, to ask so big, to approach Him? Do you question whether you heard Jesus correctly? Do you wait until you see to believe or do you believe as soon as Jesus says so?
My Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. I am in awe of You. You are mighty and Your love is amazing. I will approach You believing Your authority is above all. I will come before You knowing what You can do. I will ask because I understand the authority You carry. You can because You are second to none. You will because Your love is amazing. I praise You in Jesus' Name, amen.
