Warriors Arise: November 14, 2023
Matthew 5:30 "And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell."
Reading and re-reading this verse, then reading the commentary regarding this verse and asking God. Why is the punishment so severe? Why does Jesus instruct us to cut off our hand if it causes us to sin?
The verse before this is talking about plucking out your eye if you look upon a woman in an adulterous way. Then the verses following, Jesus begins, "furthermore...", meaning He is tying these verses together. He is about to go into divorce.
If it takes plucking out your eye to keep you from causing a massive breaching your marriage then we should take it seriously. Jesus wants us to know being faithful in our marriage is important. Your vow is as important as your eye being functioning in your body so you can see.
Maybe, if we considered the consequences of having to cut off our right hand because we can't keep from touching someone inappropriately, then we should take it seriously. Jesus is serious about the consequences of these actions against another.
When I was in school, statistics said 3 out of 4 girls had been molested, the victim of incest or rape. I can't even imagine what those statistics are today. How many hands would be cut off if we took Jesus' words seriously?
Honestly, it isn't about cutting off someone's hand, it is about making yourself remain pure, keeping your marriage pure, and others pure. Violating someone else is not excused. It is a behavior God will judge and administer judgment.
My heart aches for those who have been sexually abused. They were victims of a crime by someone who thought themselves to above punishment. Somehow they thought their desires were to be met by an unwilling person. There are severe consequences, especially if they do not turn from their wickedness and repent. God will step in and vengeance will be administered.
Father, I ask for You to come and step between the offender and the victim. I pray the victim will follow You to be healed and made whole. I pray You would wrap Your arms of love around each victim and restore what was taken from them. I pray they would feel Your arms hold them and the trauma would be removed from their being. I ask for healing in their mind and restoration in their body. I pray each one would know Your love heals; body, soul and spirit, in Jesus' name amen.
