1 Samuel 17:45-47 (NKJV) Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 47 Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord's, and He will give you into our hands.”
At this point, the Philistines should have known this was a different battle. The Philistine makes fun of David for coming with a stick to the battle. He didn't realize what kind of a battle this was. He expected to have someone fight him in hand-to-hand combat. Instead, is was a stick and stone. The Philistine was not ready for this battle. He did not have a sling and a stone. He had a sword, spear, and javelin. God was going to make a point. He was going to make an example of the Philistine who spoke so boldly against Him, obviously without knowing Him. He didn't believe God really could do the miraculous. He didn't believe God would step in and take care of His people. He didn't believe there was an Israelite who believed God had anyone who would defeat him. But when this battle was over, everyone will know what God can do and will do through one who will go with Him.
Have you ever shown up to an event with the wrong type of style of clothing? In this case, the Philistine didn't realize David would not be fighting the traditional way. He was not coming to fight the Philistine as he had jeered Saul's army. David came to the fight with his own weapons. More importantly we need to recognize he was showing up for the battle, and God would be actively involved. David knew he was not fighting the Philistine alone. He knew His God was with him. He knew this day would end with the Philistine going down. David declared the battle is the Lord's. But that doesn't mean David hid behind a rock until the Philistine was dead. David prepared, selected the right stones, and walked onto the battlefield and approached the Philistine.
David had to show up on the battlefield prepared to fight. It isn't that God couldn't have totally whipped the Philistines. He had done that to many enemies of the Israelites over the years and would do it again. However, this time, God had different plans. This time, God would be demonstrating how He works through someone no one thought would be able to win. This is how God's gets glorified. We should never be afraid to do the impossible.
If we are too small we have to see how big our God is.
If we are too weak, we have to see how strong our God is.
If we are untrained, we have to see how accurate God is.
If we are ordinary, we have to see how extraordinary God is.
If we are slow, we have to see how fast God can move on our behalf.
If we lack strategy, we have to listen to God's wisdom.
If we do not have support, we have to follow God anyway.
God is capable of defeating any foe who tries to stand against us and steal what He has given us. When this day is over, everyone will know God is not only with David, but He is also with Israel.
Father, I want to make sure I am being prepared so I will walk with You boldly onto the battlefield. I want to take back what the enemy has stolen from me. I know I am not capable of defeating my enemy without You and I don't want to. I know You are with me. I know You go before me. I want You to be made known to the world. I want them to see the demonstration of Your love for the people You love. You go with us but more importantly, You go before us. I will go with You and You will be glorified in Jesus' name amen.
