Freakishly Familiar

Warriors Arise: June18th, 2020

Luke 24:30-31 (NKJV) Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.

Something is very familiar, so familiar it is freakish! The Man who joined them on the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus sat at the table with them; He took bread; blessed, broke it and gave it to them.

These two disciples had seen Jesus bless, break and give the bread a number of times. People have mannerisms which distinguish them. When you have been friends with someone you pick up on things that identify them from someone else. It they are a long way off and you can't recognize features but you know it is them because of their particular way of carrying themselves.

When a loved one has passed away people want to remember. They want to talk about the last time they were with them. Generally, they want to talk about the last good experience they have had with them. The twelve disciples would have shared about their experience at the Passover meal, what is now called the Last Supper. The Last Supper they had with Jesus, their Lord, their teacher, their friend.

Luke 22:14-20 (NKJV) When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.

Jesus was telling them what was going to happen. He was trying to tell them why He had to die. He was trying to let them know He knew He was going to die. So what did Jesus want them to remember?

Jesus knew it was time for Him to sacrifice Himself on the cross. He knew the time had come. Even in His last hours with His disicples He was still trying to teach them. When He washed their feet, He wanted them to learn to go to God to be cleansed of sin. He bless the bread and drink bringing greater understanding, how the Passover was a precursor to Himself. The Hebrews enslaved in Egypt had to sacrifice a perfect lamb and put the blood on the doorposts so the death angel would passover that night. Jesus shed His blood for us. All who would believe would have eternal life in heaven. They would not be condemned to hell.

In the devastation of Jesus being taken in the garden, the trial at night, seeing Jesus crowned with thorns and beaten beyond recognition, wincing as He stumbled to Golgotha, the agony of knowing you couldn't do anything to save Him, the disciples would have been full of all kinds of emotions. There is one thing Jesus would hope they would remember.

Remember the last supper, the last time we fellowshipped together. If they remembered, then they would have known, Jesus knew what was about to happen. As the disciples worked through their emotions and sharing what they remembered the last things Jesus had said; they would have talked about the last supper.

Mark 14:22a (NKJV) And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.

Now these two disciples, who had opened their home to one they met on the road to Emmaus, heard the words come from His mouth. The same words the disciples had shared that they had heard at the Last Supper. There was something freakishly familiar about this man.

Father, there are so many times You have been apart of my day and I didn't know it was You. You would walk with me, talk with me, ride in my car with me, guide me, and teach me. Many of those times I neglected Your presence. I ask for You to forgive me. I want to know when You are there with me trying to be a part of my life. I ask for You to remind me of the things You have shared with me, taught me, and lead me to do. I want to remember all the times You have been there for me, with me, encouraging me, guiding me. I want to remember the times You rescued me, healed me, and kept me from danger. I ask for You to walk among the people today. I ask for You to speak direction and correction. I ask for You to heal the broken hearted and mend the weak. I ask for You to remind each one of all the times You intervened to protect them and keep them from harm's way. I ask for each one to recognize, acknowledge and remember Your involvement in their lives to keep them safe and lead them to better lives. I ask for each one to remember You. There is a way out of this madness and it is to know You, turn our backs on the lies of the enemy, and follow You. I ask for people to have the courage to allow themselves to be remembered of Your goodness and faithfulness. I ask for each one to recognize You have come to get them out of the muck and mire. You are going to place their feet on solid ground. I ask for Your mercy to extend to the darkest places and the hardest hearts. I ask for Your love to conquer all fear in Jesus' name amen.
