Isaiah 61:1-3 (NKJV)
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,
3 To console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”
Sometimes I just want the bad guy to get what is coming to him. Yep, I want him to get caught and the vengeance of the God to come upon him. The torment can be so intense, the loss of sleep, the quenching pressure of stress, and the avalanche of lies, slander, and gossip seems impossible to get out of their sticky web. The only way to be free and justified is if God Himself were to come and declare the truth, establish justice and everyone's thoughts were cleansed.
In Luke, when Jesus read from Isaiah, He had already begun to release the vengeance of God. The reign of the devil and his demons was over. Jesus taught how to remove them and then gave His disciples power over them as well.
Jesus removed the deaf and dumb spirit.
Matthew 17:18 (NKJV) And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.
Jesus removed a legion of demons.
Mark 5:1-20 (NKJV) Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. 2 And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains, 4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. 7 And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me.”
8 For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” 9 Then He asked him, “What is your name?” And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” 10 Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country. 11 Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains. 12 So all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us to the swine, that we may enter them.” 13 And at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea. 14 So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened. 15 Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 16 And those who saw it told them how it happened to him who had been demon-possessed, and about the swine. 17 Then they began to plead with Him to depart from their region.18 And when He got into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him. 19 However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.” 20 And he departed and began to proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled.
Jesus gave His disciples authority over demons.
Luke 9:1 (NKJV) Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.
Jesus' disciples were astonished they could operate in the authority Jesus had given them.
Luke 10:17-20 (NKJV) Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” 8 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
Ephesians 6:11-13 (NKJV) Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
There are times I really want to get mad at a person. I can be so sick and tired of the lies and divisive ways. The Spirit of God will remind me that my battle not against them. There are spiritual hosts of wickedness manipulating and releasing havoc. The want to kill anything with life, destroy anyone pursuing the dreams God placed within them, and steal their courage to take a stand against them. There is a way to battle and it isn't by getting mad at a person. It is taking the battle into enemy territory and releasing the authority of God to remove them from their lofty place. I have to trust God.
Romans 12:19 (NKJV)
Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.
As much as I may want to take matters into my own hands, I turn to God, plead my case and let Him step in to defend me, lift me up out of the muck and the mire, and issue judgement. Before you think I get off collecting my $200 before I pass Go, there are times when He addresses the "percentage" of wrong; because I engaged when I shouldn't have. He has taught me to quickly come to Him when the attack begins before I respond on my own. Then I can apply verse 20.
Romans 12:20 (NKJV) Therefore
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
If he is thirsty, give him a drink;
For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”
Father, I celebrate Jesus and what He demonstrated. The acceptable year of the Lord placed Him in a position of authority as well as having the power to remove demonic establishment. Then Jesus gave that same authority to HIs disciples and later to all of us when He commissioned us to expand His Father's kingdom. Jesus didn't leave us powerless, at the mercy of the enemy. Jesus showed us how to use the power and then gave it to us to advance His kingdom. I celebrate the birth of Jesus because His coming taught us how to use the power of God to advance the kingdom of God. The birth of Christ is began the crumbling of the kingdoms of darkness in Jesus' name amen.
