Warriors Arise: June 11, 2022
1 Samuel 16:19 (NKJV) Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”
There may have been more said, but this is what we have, "Send me your son David, who is with the sheep." Can you imagine what would be going through your head? "He knows. Someone must have told him about Samuel coming and anointing David." Can you imagine the desperate look in Jesse's eyes when he gets this message? Most likely he would have heard of the Spirit of God leaving King Saul. He would have heard of the demonic torment King Saul was enduring. He would have wanted to ask why David was being summoned. But what could he do? Was he sending his son to be killed? If King Saul knew about the anointing, was he going to kill his son? So many tings would be running through his mind.
When my 15 year old applied to become a page at the Iowa Capital and was given an interview, I counseled her and we practiced how she was to present herself. We practiced everything. We picked out a black business dress with a red blazer and heels. She practiced walking into the room without making a sound. She practiced introducing herself and offering her application just incase they didn't have it in front of them. I told her to wait to sit down until they offered her a chair. Then we practiced how she was to sit down and in one movement she was to unbutton her blazer, slide her leather folder beside her in the seat, place her hands on her lap and tuck one ankle behind the other. We practiced sitting forward in the seat so she would not slouch. Then I would interview her. I coached her how to answer their questions, to speak to their ears so her voice would carry and sound confident. I taught her the importance of looking the interviewer in the eye when she answered. I taught her to collect her answer before speaking. She didn't need to give the first thing that popped into her head but not to wait too long. Then we practiced how to stand when the interview was over. In one smooth movement she untucked her ankles, buttoned her jacket, and with her portfolio in her hand and in those heels walk quietly out of the room.
I was sitting in the foyer about 4 tables from the room in which she was interviewed. She came out and walked toward me. She was so excited, but calmly said, "Let's go so I can tell you what happened." Then a man, the Speaker of the House, came out of the room and looked our direction. He came over to the table and told me how extraordinary my daughter had been in the interview. He told me I should be very proud of her and continued to rave about the way she had carried herself and conducted herself throughout the interview. As soon as he turned Lydia about came out of her skin, "Let's go, Mom." She was so excited to tell me about the interview in private. We barely got out the door before she started sharing.
I wonder if Jesse went to go get David so he could prep him. There is no doubt, I would have gone. I would have told the servant of King Saul. "I will personally go get my son and bring him to you." Returning with David would have been the only private time he would have with him. All the things I went over with Lydia, I would have gone over with David. But there is one more thing I would have told him, "We have no idea if he knows. Everyone here who saw Samuel anoint you knows how important it is that they not say a word about that day. They know it could be their very life, not by my hand but by the sword of King Saul. No matter what your mind may be telling you or the questions you may be asked, act as if you know nothing about that day. Remember, I left you with the sheep when Samuel came. You were not here when he arrived nor when the food was ready. Be careful, my son. He is your king, honor him. Say nothing about that day to anyone. I am sending provisions with you that you find favor in his sight. While the provisions are being gathered, wash yourself and put on a clean tunic. Remember, the Lord Your God is with You, like he was with Joshua when our people entered the promise land. I pray all goes will with you. Your very life could depend on your silence on that day. Wait for God to bring the reality of the prophetic words, not by your hand but by the Lord your God who parted the Red Sea to free our people from slavery and then the Jordan River to give us the promise land. Go in peace, honor your king, and be faithful to God in all things."
What would you have said? It would be so difficult to keep fear from consuming my every thought. If they would have allowed, would you have sent a servant with him to return with what happened? There is one question I would want to know. Did King Saul know Samuel had anointed David to be the next king of Israel? I would send my most trusted servant to return with every word he heard but not to speak a word. Get information, but do not give any. Time will tell if he knows.
Father, fear is so powerful. It can consume my every thought and physically take me captive. I turn my face to You and seek peace. I seek peace that surpasses all understanding. I place each situation in my life before You. I yield to the leading of Your Holy Spirit and I trust You. You make a way to free me from eh captivity of fear. You make a way for me to cross into my promise land. You are for me, who can be against me. I will trust in the Lord my God, the maker of heaven and earth. I will not allow fear to hold me captive or paralyze me. I will walk in Your ways and celebrate the greatness of all You are. I will trust You to lead me in the way I am to go. I will follow You and put my trust in You. I will honor the authorities You have placed over me. I will receive Your council and respond with dignity and respect. I will trust You in all I do and that I am asked to do. Whether they know the destiny you have anointed me to fulfill or not, I will trust You to protect me, position me, and provide for my needs until it becomes a reality in Jesus' name amen.
