Hear My Cry

Warriors Arise: October 24, 2021

Luke 17:11-19 (NKJV) Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. 13 And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14 So when He saw them, He said to them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan. 17 So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? 18 Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”

When you have been afflicted for a period of time it can feel like the burden is too much to carry any longer. We have no idea how long these men were afflicted with leprosy. Sometimes we can read the Bible and not calculate time. It is easy to think they only suffered with leprosy for a moment and then Jesus passed by, that they then called out and He healed them. But that isn't the case. These men were most likely afflicted for quite some time, maybe they were even close to death which is why they were still their waiting for Jesus to pass by. There had to be more than 10 lepers in the colony. But there were only 10 who were still watching when Jesus passed by.

They called out to Jesus, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” Mercy in this verse means compassion. They were calling for Jesus to be moved in His heart for their terrible affliction. They call Him, Master, as a sign of One they knew to have power and ability. If someone is a master of their trade, they excel. They are fluent and skilled in their abilities. If someone is master of their house, they call all the shots and no one second guesses them. Jesus is the Master of His trade. Scripture tells us over and over again that everyone who came to Jesus was healed, delivered, cleansed of leprosy, the lame walked, and the blind saw.

Luke 7:18-23 (NKJV) Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. 19 And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” 20 When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ” 21 And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight. 22 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”

John the Baptist asked about the signs and wonders in the 7th chapter of Luke, these lepers called out to Jesus in the 17th chapter. Word had gotten around. Even the lepers knew of Jesus. In their eyes, He is the Master of His trade. They had probably been praying and hoping. He, the Master of getting rid of sickness and restoring the body, would pass by. They just needed Him to come close enough so they could make their request known. There was no issue in their minds as to whether they thought Jesus could cleanse them; therefore, they would plea to His heart. Surely, He would have compassion and extend mercy to them.

Father, I wait in anticipation. You are the Master. You take care of Your people. You make Yourself known and You make Yourself available. I come before You to make my request known. I call out to You to restore my body, redeem wasted time, and reconcile broken relationships. I ask for Your compassion to be extended to my life in Jesus' name amen.
