Warriors Arise: May 28, 2023
Matthew 2:11 (NKJV) And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Can you imagine these men walking into your house? How would you respond when they fell down and worshipped your child? It would totally be weird and awkward. Yes, Mary's child is the Son of God; however, I would think she had gotten caught up in motherhood, being wife and all that entails that Jesus, being the Son of God, might have not been at the forefront of her mind. No one knew who He was. They had to travel. They were married when they arrived in Bethlehem so no one knew she was pregnant before the marriage.
What was going through her mind? This day started off normal, just like any other day. What is happening? This is so weird. Who are these men? Why are they here? What does this mean?
I am guessing Mary was probably nervous, afraid, looking past them to see who else would be coming. Maybe wanting to see if she could send a neighbor child to go get Joseph. What does this mean?
Think of all the questions that would be racing through your mind. It doesn't tells she answered the door. Was Jesus peeking from behind Mary's skirt? Did they come in on their own and she was setting the table with Jesus under her feet? We don't know, but no matter how this happened, it would be weird. It would be like entering the twilight zone or even having your deepest secret revealed. How would their friends respond? Would the whispering be about them again?
There are times when God says it is time for your past to be revealed. He isn't trying to bring you out in a negative way; however, He is definitely letting you know things are about to change. He is on the move again in your life and you need to be made aware. Things are about to change very quickly.
The wisemen showing up is really a sign as a reminder to Joseph and Mary, that Jesus is not like every other child. As much as they tried to start fresh in Bethlehem and be accepted in a place where no one knew their past, this would not be where they remained. God had a special call on His Son's life.
God was giving them a signal. If the wisemen could find Jesus, so could Herod who had been searching and watching for years. This is why Herod called for the census and everyone to return to their town of origin two years earlier. This was not the time for Joseph and Mary to become complacent and comfortable. They would be responsible for protecting Jesus. God was reminding them that He would make a way to provide and protect them.
There are times when weird happens and we need to take note. We need to turn to God and ask Him to fill in the blanks, to bring understanding and direction. Is there anything weird going on in your life? Do you recognize it? Will you ask God about it? Too many times I have noticed the weird in my life, but haven't asked God. I couldn't wait for everything to settle and return to the normal way of life. But God likes to step in and let us know He has been working things out in the midst of our "normalcy" and not things are about to get weird. We are to ready ourselves for what is next.
I have no idea how Mary and Joseph could have been ready for what God was about to do, but He let them know others knew who Jesus was. The wise men found Jesus because they were looking. God was able to lead them becuase their hearts were tender and open to truth. Herod's heart was open to the truth of the prophecies, but it certainly wasn't tender.
We should be aware of the weird. It could be God trying to get our attention. It could be the enemy seeking to steal, kill or destroy the works of God in our life. The wise will pay attention to the weird and seek God for understanding and direction.
Father, I come before You. Weird can be so awkward. It makes me feel uncomfortable. I can get lost in it and all I want to do is have it over, get out or run away. I pray for for boldness to be willing to seek you in the midst of the weird. I pray I would be alert to know You just might be behind the awkward. I do not want the weird to keep me from being aware that You have been at work and are working things out for the next thing I am supposed to do. I thank You for getting my attention. There are times I need the weird to get my attention. I need the weird so I allow my attention to be shifted from the normalcy of my day. I pray I would be aware and see You when a weird situation comes up. I position myself to hear clearly from You even in the weird situations in Jesus' name amen.
