Matthew 15:23-25 (NKJV) But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.” 24 But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”
I am intrigued by this woman, because in the midst of knowing they don't know what to do with her, she continues to press in. She positions herself for Jesus and worships Him. She wants Him to look at her. She acknowledged who He is by calling Him, Lord. She knows no one else can help her, but she is going to petition Jesus for something out of timing. Just like Jesus' mother.
Remember Jesus' first miracle? Water into wine at the wedding feast. Jesus is with His friends. His mother comes to Him and tells Him the situation. He tells His mother, "Woman, it is not my time." She tells the servants to do whatever He says and the first miracle becomes reality. Now, here is the Canaanite woman. It is not time for Jesus to save the world. That isn't supposed to happen until after He conquers hell and death. But this woman will petition Him. She knows who He is.
Later, when Jesus tells the following parable, I wonder if He was thinking of this Canaanite woman?
Luke 18:1-8 (NKJV) Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, 2 saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. 3 Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, ‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ 4 And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, 5 yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’ ” 6 Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. 7 And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? 8 I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”
The Canaanite woman's persistence to press past the offense that she was not born of the right people and the counsel of His disciples to send her away, did not deter her. She decided she would worship Jesus more not turn and miserably walk defeated all the way home. No, she would worship. He is the One. He is the only One. He will free her daughter. Therefore, she will follow and worship then follow and worship again. She will not go home until she know He has done what She knows He can do.
How does this hit you?
How many times have we yielded to the enemy tormenting us when we know the One who can bring deliverance to our lives? Really. Answer the question. How many times have you yielded to the enemy tormenting you when you know the One who can bring deliverance to your life?
Father, my God, my Savior. I don't even know how many things I have "endured" that I didn't have to. I figured since You didn't receive me with open arms that You weren't going to do anything. I stopped pursuing You. I stopped diligently seeking You. I turned and backed away. I have kept our relationship at the distance I stopped pursing You, at the point I embraced defeat. Instead of surrendering to You with all that I am, I surrendered to defeat. I ask for You to forgive me. Today, I am running to You. I am going to pursue You with all that I am. I will worship You with everything that I have. You are the One, the only One who can deliver me from torment, restore my soul, redeem the time I have lost from when I turned away. I ask for the strength to return to You. I do not want this distance between You and I. I come to You and worship You with all that I am in Jesus' name amen.
