Isaiah 61:1-3 (NKJV)
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, 3 To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”
"And the opening of the prison to those who are bound", what does that mean? When did Jesus create a jail break? This happened literally for Peter and again for Paul and Silas. However, when did Jesus open the prison?
When I check my references and the study notes referring to Isaiah 61:1, I am told to check out Matthew 10:1.
Matthew 10:1 (NKJV) And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.
The study notes from my NKJV Spirit-filled Bible for this verse says, "Jesus bestows upon His twelve disciples the designated power that He Himself possessed that is, "authority" to advance the messianic ministry through exorcism healing." Jesus and His disciples released the power of God to create an opportunity for people to be free from the prison that bound them. The people needed an opening to be free. How many miracles had the 10 lepers heard of before they saw Jesus? How long had they waited for an opening? Once they had that opening, when they spotted Jesus, they took it. They called out to Jesus and He sent them to the priest to be declared healed. They were healed on the way. They took the opening and were bound no more.
The woman with the issue of blood. She spent all of her money trying to be healed. But when she heard Jesus had come to her city, she took the opening. She dared to get out in public and make everyone unclean who touched her. She covered herself and reached down to touch the hem of His garment. She took the opening and was bound no more!
The man at the pool of Bethesda. Jesus came by and asked why He was not healed. The man said no one was there to help him into the pool. Jesus tells the man to get up, take his mat and walk. By the word of the Lord, the opening was created and the man did it, bound no more.
Every time Jesus spoke, He created an opening. Nicodemus came to Jesus at night. He wanted to know the truth of Salvation. He was bound by the law but needed to be free to live in faith. He would need a Savior because only Jesus is perfect. Therefore, He was the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Nicodemus needed to be freed from the law into grace, mercy and love.
Sometimes I find myself praying, "God, I just need an opening. Show me the door and I will go through." I stir up my faith to believe, "Soon, Jesus will open the door." I do not want to lose heart, embrace the bondage, get caught in comfort, be lulled into laziness. I want to belike one of the POWs who kept their minds sharp, their body prepared and their heart believing that they would be rescued. They were ready when the door was opened and freedom came. It takes faith and courage to keep believing for the fullness of what God has for me. When I get knocked down, I find Jesus. Jesus will open the door. Peace will come. Love will fill my heart. My resolve to fulfill my purpose will be renewed. I know Jesus will open the door and I will be bound no more.
Father, You are amazing! Jesus, You came to open the door that I would be bound no more. Thank You for coming to earth. Thank You for showing me how to live victorious! Thank You being my sacrifice, so I could be in relationship with God. Jesus, You have set me free, I am bound no more. I celebrate You today and each day my excitement builds to celebrate Your birthday. I will see the opening and pass through into freedom, in Jesus' name amen.
