John 1:29 (NKJV) The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
Why is Jesus referred to as the Lamb of God? The sacrifice of a perfect lamb was something God instructed His people to do back in Egypt. The night the death angel was to pass through the land of Egypt as the final plague, before Pharaoh released the Hebrews. God instructed Moses to tell the people to select a perfect lamb, one without blemish and one that was a year old to sacrifice for the atonement of their sin. They were to take the blood of the lamb and paint it on the their doorpost. The death angel would pass by any house with the blood of the lamb painted on its doorpost.
All of us will one day die, well unless we are here when the trumpet sounds. Since we do not know that day, let's focus on what we do know. Jesus was sent to take away the sins of the world. Everyone has the chance to engage in a relationship with God. Everyone has a choice. There are some who will die without engaging in a personal relationship with God. That is a terrible travesty. But for those who have recognized who Jesus is, what He has done, and made Him Lord of their life; they shall inherit eternal life in heaven and an empowered life as an overcomer here on earth.
Jesus is the Son of God. He is God's lamb to cover our sin. God offered Jesus. His blood cleanses us from all unrighteousness and removes our sins as far as the east is from the west. We have a choice. We have to choose to receive Jesus as the sacrificial lamb for our sins.
Jesus came from heaven, lived a victorious life here on earth, and willingly gave up His life so we could triumph over the devil here on earth and live eternally with God in heaven. Jesus allowed Himself to be led, as Isaiah penned in 53:7, "A lamb led to the slaughter..."
Jesus created the opportunity for each one of us to be saved if we will confess our sins and establish Him as Lord and Savior in our life.
Revelation 5:11-13 (NKJV)
I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice:
“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
To receive power and riches and wisdom,
And strength and honor and glory and blessing!”
13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying:
“Blessing and honor and glory and power
Be to Him who sits on the throne,
And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”
Thankfully, we will never have to sacrifice what Jesus sacrificed. Instead of you and I dying on that cross, He chose to. I couldn't have been my own sacrifice, because I am not perfect. My blood is not perfect. I did overcome sin, temptation, and the enemy. But Jesus did. He is the perfect lamb. He is the Lamb of God whose blood takes away the sin of the world. How thankful are you for what He did?
The angels in heaven never stop worshiping Jesus. They sing praises every minute of every day. Does this seem odd to you? Can you imagine? But think a little further, they are singing praises for something the didn't need Jesus to do for them. They are in awe of what Jesus did for us. They are singing praises for what Jesus has done for each one of us, from the purest of heart to the darkest of intentions. Their praise for what Jesus did for us is a celebration of His courageous love.
They praise Him for what they didn't need. They praise Him for what He did for us. Since they praise Him for something they didn't need Him to do for them, why do we struggle to celebrate Jesus for what we needed Him to do for us and He did it completely. There is nothing lacking in what Jesus did to bring us freedom in this life and the life to come.
Father, this is astounding! I have known of Jesus as the Lamb of God. I have known He knew the pain, anguish, sacrifice He would have to go through to give me the opportunity to be in relationship with You. I choose today to celebrate Jesus for the sacrifice He made. I celebrate that He left His mighty place of power in heaven to be born in a lowly manger in rags. I celebrate His love for me to follow through with sacrificing His life for mine. My blood would have never been pure enough to a count for all of my sins. I will worship Jesus and celebrate His birth. I will celebrate His life. I will celebrate His courage to get up on the cross. I will celebrate His victory over hell. I will celebrate His birthday and remember what He has done for me in Jesus' name amen.
