Into the Darkness

Warriors Arise: November 30, 2021

Exodus 20:18-21 (NKJV) Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. 19 Then they said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.” 20 And Moses said to the people, “Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin.” 21 So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was.

People, my beloved friends, be like Moses. My heart cries for each one of you. Moses witnessed everything the people witnessed. He saw the hand of God do the same miracles as all the people did back in Egypt. He saw God part the waters and make them fall again into place, just like the people did. He saw God provide water from a rock and manna from the sky. He heard the thunder and the lightning flashes, the blast of the trumpet and the smoke fill the mountain, just like the people did. But Moses responded differently than the people. Moses drew near the thick darkness.

Something we hadn't seen before but the smoke made it dark. He never knew where the next flashes of lightning would come from. It was dark and Moses went into the darkness. He went into the darkness for one reason.

God was in the darkness.

My friend, I do not know what you are facing right now. Maybe nothing. But there are times we are not to be afraid of the darkness. It is in the darkness that we find God. It is in the midst of those most difficult times we meet Jesus. Think of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego. Someone was in the fire before they walked in. King Nebuchadnezzar said it looked like the Son of God (Daniel 3). They had to go into the fiery furnace to walk with Jesus. Sometimes I wonder if they were perturbed that Nebuchadnezzar called them to come out. It does not say Jesus came with them. He was only with them in the fire.

You may have to go into the fire to walk with Jesus. You may have to walk into the darkness to meet with God. It isn't comfortable and it will test every fiber of your faith, but you and I must be determined to go where God is. We must meet with God when He comes, when He calls.

Do not be afraid. Go where God is even into the darkness, even into the fire. He will meet meet with You there.

Father, it is so hard to go where I cannot see. It is so difficult to feel the heat, to know things are getting out of control and I might get burned. I have to make myself remember You are with me always. I have to put one foot in front of the other and walk to where You are. It is so important to meet You when You come. I cannot turn away from the opportunity to meet with you. If Moses had not gone, we would not know the fullness of Your love is to protect us, provide for us and to give us purpose. If Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego had not gone into the fire they would not have been prompted; but the kingdom would not have know that You are the God Most High, the only God to be worshipped. I lay my fears down and walk into the darkness to be with You. I will set my eyes on You and go to where You are. You are my God and I will come and commune with You when You call in Jesus' name amen.
