1 Chronicles 13:8 (NKJV) Then David and all Israel played music before God with all their might, with singing, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets.
Can you imagine this? Something in me would like to think this was organized; however, everything else in me says, "How can it be organized?!" This happened to be the first time they tried to bring the ark to the city. Then we find out when David returns to the city and waits for the time to bring the ark, along with investigating what went wrong, he not only established the priests and the Levites to do their God-given responsibilities, as given through Moss to Aaron and the Levites, but he also assigned a leader, one the singers. I wonder if the leader over the singers was also the leader over the musicians?
1 Chronicles 15:16 (NKJV) Then David spoke to the leaders of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers accompanied by instruments of music, stringed instruments, harps, and cymbals, by raising the voice with resounding joy.
1 Chronicles 15:22 (NKJV) Chenaniah, leader of the Levites, was instructor in charge of the music, because he was skillful;
We do not know what Chenaniah was skillful in, but we do know David must have thought pretty highly of him. David wanted someone in charge. He wanted an instructor of the music. When they went the first time there might have been people singing that should have sung or people playing instruments that had no skill; therefore, David had to place Chenaniah in charge to be the instructor.
Remember David had invited all of Israel to come, sing, play instruments with joy. I have no concept of how Chenaniah instructed. Maybe he had the Levites who played instruments play and their singers come in and the rest of Israel had to join what the Levites were doing. I would think it would be some type of pandemonium if everyone played whatever they wanted or sung their own song.
Who am I to have these thoughts? What does it matter to me as long as God gets glorified. Did you know there are over a 100 verses in the Bible referring to making a joyful noise to the Lord?
This set of verses even have the elements of the earth in worship God, the Creator. When the elements of the earth worship God with the sound they make, then why not those of us who are made in the image of God? Worship comes from within, from what you have been given and pours out of a heart of gratitude for all God has done.
Psalms 98:4-8 (NKJV)
Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth;
Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.
5 Sing to the Lord with the harp,
With the harp and the sound of a psalm,
6 With trumpets and the sound of a horn;
Shout joyfully before the Lord, the King.
7 Let the sea roar, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell in it;
8 Let the rivers clap their hands;
Let the hills be joyful together before the Lord,
Psalms 100:1-2 (NKJV)
Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!
2 Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.
The following reminds me of my kids. They would ride home from school together and work on a song. Then they would come in the house singing boldly, loudly and with so much fun! It was GREAT! They did this so often I began to anticipate what the next song would be and when they would burst through the door.
Ephesians 5:19 (NKJV) speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,
I imagine on the day David and all of Israel brought the ark to the city they were inspired with new songs of praise.
Psalms 40:3 (NKJV)
He has put a new song in my mouth—
Praise to our God;
Many will see it and fear,
And will trust in the Lord.
Why do we all want the last word? Because we feel it is imperative that others understand what we feel is valid and important. David did the same thing. The last Psalm represents exactly what he thought was the most important in life and relationship with God.
Psalms 150 (NKJV)
1 Praise the Lord!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty firmament!
2 Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!
3 Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
Praise Him with the lute and harp!
4 Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
5 Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord!
I do not know what your day has been like or will be, but I will leave you with this verse.
Philippians 4:4 (NKJV) Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!
Father, You are worthy of all my praise. I will lift Your name on high. I will lift up my voice and sing. I will play an instrument with joy. I will pour out my thanksgiving upon You. I will sing aloud and not be afraid who hears. I will not be afraid of those who mock my inability and cannot see that my joy comes from You. I will rejoice in the Lord my God who has created me in His image, saved me by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and empowered me through the Holy Spirit. I will worship You, my Lord, for You speak and I hear Your voice. You strengthen me in my weakness. You call me out into Your purpose and in faith I walk with You in Jesus' name amen.
