Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Have you wondered why Jesus addresses the "poor in spirit" first? After asking the Lord, then looking at the other blessings, my mind wouldn't let the question go. I needed an answer. In Scripture, order matters. What happens first or what was said first matters in understanding God and His ways. So, what makes this a priority? Why is speaking to the "poor in spirit," a big deal?
God can work a miracle in our life whether we have asked for it or not. God doesn't need our permission to do something loving for us. Matter-of-fact, His love compels Him to extend miracles, provision, connections, opportunities, compassion, wisdom, grace, agape, and faith. Yes, God has faith in us. No one can continue to try to reach us time and time and time again if they do not have an insurmountable amount of faith to believe that one day, we will turn to Him, recognize Him, and want Him in our life.
God never gives up on us. No matter how many times we tell Him, "No," or turn and walk the other way. He continues to allow us to make our choice. He gives us our time in our decisions and when things aren't working out like we would like, He makes Himself known. He wants us to know we can always reconnect with Him and walk in His blessing.
God sees when our spirit is but a flicker. He reaches down and throws another log on the fire. Then He breathes His words of encouragement, affirmation, and purpose over the fire and it ignites. The log might be a verse of promise or reminding us of our destiny. He hopes the flicker within us will embrace the log so faith grows.
God knows when we need to be strengthened in our spirit. For most of us, we need this first before we will receive His blessing in other areas of our life. One who is poor in spirit; disappointed, discouraged, or depressed, doesn't have embers to be relit. Therefore, He speaks first to our spirit and breathes life into us before the flicker turns to ash. He wants faith in Him to burn brightly in each of our lives.
Father, thank You for throwing another log on the fire in my life. I needed to know Your promises continue to stand. I needed to believe I had something left in me You could use. I look, anticipating Your promises in my life. I receive Your breath to revive the fire and bring it back to life within me. My faith will grow and I will burn for You, in Jesus' name amen.
