Matthew 6:9In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Hallowed: made holy, consecrated, greatly revered and honored. What does it mean to be consecrated? When we say, "our Father in heaven, consecrated be Your name," what does that mean?
Consecrate means to make or declare something sacred; dedicate formally for a religious purpose.
Immediately, I think of Job. In Job 31, he is sharing that he has made a covenant with his eyes. The reference clearly points out he made the covnenat with his eyes at an earlier time. He is telling his friend why he has not sinned against God in this area.
Why did Job make a covenant with his eyes? He was consecrating his eyes to be sacred. He would not look upon a woman lustfully. Having made that decision a head of time, it would empower him to not take a second look at a woman or think about her after meeting her. He would be devoted to his wife and look upon another woman lustfully. He had consecrated his eyes. He set aside the natural desire to look upon a woman, take the second look, think about her afterward, in order to consecrate his eyes to keep himself pure.
What if we made a covneant with our mouth? What if we were so convicted by making sure we used the name of our Father with honor, reverence, and holiness that His name is consecrated, it is set aside as hallowed?
If I yelled at my kids or my husand, using thier names in a way in which it becomes a cuss word and then turned around and called thier name in an endearing fashion, would they be confused? Would they trust me? Would they think, "Oh, so, now, you are going to be nice, edifying, encouraging, and supprotive? What about when you used my name with hatred, disgust, or disdain, like a cuss word? My name is not a cuss word. Don't use it that was."
They would have every right to tell me to challenge the way I have used thier name. Why do we think it is ok to used God's name with such heated venom, disdain, and filth when we are speaking? It isn't. However, I wonder if we have truly consecrated His name?
How have you made the Father's name sacred? Have you formally made a declaration to only use the name of God is reverence, awe, joyfully, celebration, and with honor? Like Job, you do not have to do this in a formal setting. For me, it is a private matter. I don't need to tell everyone, "Hey, I am about to make a convenant with my mouth and how I use the name of God." It really is a matter between me and God.
It isn't enough to just make sure I don't cuss using His name. I want to make sure when I use His name it is with honor, reverence, admiration, respect, awareness and intentional.
My Father in heaven, I have concecrated my mouth so I say Your name with honor. I will tell of Your grateness and magnify Your name. I will lift You on high and give You praise for You are worthy. I will see You and all You have done and give You glory. I will speak of You and say Your name with awe and wonder. You amaze me. Your ways are incredible and Your love is beyond comprehension. I will hallow Your name in Jesus' name amen.
