1 Chronicles 16:7-17 (NKJV) On that day David first delivered this psalm into the hand of Asaph and his brethren, to thank the Lord:
8 Oh, give thanks to the Lord!
Call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples!
9 Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him;
Talk of all His wondrous works!
10 Glory in His holy name;
Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord!
11 Seek the Lord and His strength;
Seek His face evermore!
12 Remember His marvelous works which He has done,
His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth,
13 O seed of Israel His servant,
You children of Jacob, His chosen ones!
14 He is the Lord our God;
His judgments are in all the earth.
15 Remember His covenant forever,
The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations,
16 The covenant which He made with Abraham,
And His oath to Isaac,
17 And confirmed it to Jacob for a statute,
To Israel for an everlasting covenant,
I had to chuckle to myself as I realized David is using some name dropping. This isn't a new thing. This isn't a new covenant. It is a covenant that God made with Abraham, and He gave Isaac and then confirmed with Jacob. With Jacob, God made it a statue. What is a statute? A statute is a written law passed by a legislative body. In this case, God is that legislative body. Why is it written, so the people would not forget; but also so there would be no discrepancy over what was said. After Jacob there would be twelve heads of the household and one might misinterpret what God said. This covenant was passed from one to one to one to twelve. There could be all kinds of misinterpretations is if it hadn't been written down. God wanted it to be binding. His people would grow in numbers and they would each have access to this statue and know it was for each one of them.
Why would David feel compelled to drop the names of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? He was re-presenting what was already given to each one of the. This was for all Israel. This is for God's people. He was trying to connect hundreds of years, from when God made the covenant with Abraham, an oath to Isaac and confirmed with Jacob through a written statute.
The Bible was written several thousand years ago. Many people find it difficult to connect with God's Word: what He spoke to His people, the Israelites and embrace those promises for themselves. Jesus made a way for even the Gentiles to receive the promises of God. The convent God made with Abraham is the same covenant He offers to us today. The oath He spoke to Isaac is the same oath He offers to us today. The confirmation He gave to Jacob still stands firm for us today. The statues of God are for each one of us today. So, are they active in your life? God desires to find a person, a people group, His people who will align their lives with the convent He has made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. When we cannot receive or engage in this convent relationship with God we are missing out. God doesn't want us to miss out, but we have to receive it.
I can make a covenant with someone by telling them I will be available for them at any time. I can tell them all they have to do is call me or come over and I will follow-through with my covenant. However, if they never call, then they are not activating what I have offered them. If they never come over, our relationship never grows and they are missing out on the fullness of what our relationship could be. They are missing out on what I have to offer in the relationship. God makes this offer to us. However, if we do not embrace the covenant we miss out on the fulfillment of the convent in our lives.
The friend that I have offered the covenant relationship may tell others what I haven't done for them and all I have promised; however, if they never told me what they wanted me to do, am I the one that has not fulfilled my covenant? If I don't know what they need; how can I help. God is the same way. Yes, He knows what we need, but there is value, an importance to our asking God for what He offers, for the fulfillment of the covenant. When we don't ask, how can we go around saying He didn't do?
We need to know the covenant in which God has offered to us through Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. Many times we don't have because we do not ask.
Luke 11:9-13 (NKJV) “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
What is it that God desires us to ask? Are you in covenant relationship with God? Do you know what God has promised? Are you asking for those things?
Father, I turn to You. I desire to know the covenant You have made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I will search out the Scriptures and study them. This is an inheritance to me. I do not want to miss out on what You have promised. I have lived so long not knowing You, Your ways and Your covenant. It is time I know what You have promised and receive Your covenant. You do not want me to live with less than what You have said is for me. Forgive me for expecting You to give me what You have promised without knowing You and the covenant You have offered. Forgive me for not having the relationship to believe You are going to give me the best of what You have offered. I will search out the Scriptures and know You, Your ways and Your covenant in Jesus' name amen.
