1 Chronicles 15:1 (NKJV) David built houses for himself in the City of David; and he prepared a place for the ark of God, and pitched a tent for it.
Yes, David built a house in the City of David. In history, people wanted what the king had; however, I would think David didn't want any part of what Saul had.
First of all, why would he want to live in the city or house of Saul? There were so many bad memories there. Saul tried to kill him two times in the throne room, when David had been called upon to play his harp to relieve the distressing spirit that was upon Saul.
Second, he wasn't trying to take anything from Saul. He actually gave Saul's family all the land and things of Saul. There are several reasons for this:
He didn't want war among the tribes of Israel.
He was honoring Jonathan, his best friend, Saul's son.
He would not have people think, he had bettered his life and well-being because of Saul or any other man. David would make sure there was no mistake, it was not because of man he was called, anointed, and blessed but by God.
David and his men conquered his own city. It was a city in Judah. It was not in the territory of the tribe of Benjamin, Saul's family.
There are times in the Bible when one person's ceiling is another man's floor. For instance, Elijah and Elisha, David and Solomon, Jesus and His disciples. However, there are also times when we are not to build upon what someone else has; because God is not in the union. The Bible warns against being unequally yoked in marriage. God tells us in His Word that we are not be be business partners with an unbeliever. Saul did not honor God, nor did he pursue a relationship with God. There was no chance David would establish the throne God had given him upon the throne of a man that didn't honor God.
What has God called you to? Are you trying to build it with people that do not have God's heart or God's heart for what you are called to do? If others cannot see what God has called you to do, please do not waste your time in trying to get their approval. God will bring alongside you those who see His hand upon your life. They will champion you. They will keep you lifted up before the Father, so you hear clearly, receive strength and provision for God's vision upon your life. They will walk with you and help the vision of God become a reality. There is no need chasing people who cut you down or undermine what God is doing in your life. If they can't see it, then you aren't gong to be able to prove it to them. You have to trust God that they are not the ones God has provided for you as your armor bearers and co-laborers. It doesn't mean they are against you. Some are totally against you and the call of God on your life. You will never be able to prove yourself to them. Therefore, you must move on with God or you will be stuck in the quicksand of proving yourself, while they watch you be swallowed up by the sand.
Saul couldn't believe David was so innocent. He had plans. He wanted his son to be the next king, but that was not God's plan. As Scripture reads, David never tried to usurp Saul's position. He never spoke against Jonathan. He had the chance to kill Saul, but didn't. He would not have received Saul's daughter's hand in marriage without a display of character, honor and loyalty. But Saul had rejected God; therefore, he couldn't believe David would be a man of honor. Thankfully, David never forgot he was God's son. Therefore, he responded to honor his Father, while under attack from Saul.
God had chosen someone new, because the one God first chose rejected Him. David would not build God's earthly kingdom upon a faulty foundation. Therefore, David captured a city and built his house there among his people, his tribe, the tribe of Judah.
Father, forgive me for trying to establish what You have called me to do with people who are not for me. Forgive me for wanting their approval, affirmation, encouragement, when they couldn't give it, because they couldn't see Your calling upon my life. I bless them in their relationship with You. I bless their calling to be established. I bless each one to seek after You more intently than ever before. Forgive me for trying to establish what You have called me to do, upon the faulty foundation of another's life. I want my foundation to be You, Your Word upon my life and with the people who see what You purposed inside of me. I will take my city and build my house in the place among the people that are a part of my tribe. You will be glorified as we establish worship at all times. I will seek You and listen to Your words. I am free to be who You have called me to be in Jesus' name amen.
