Not Once, but Twice

Warriors Arise: September 20, 2022

1 Samuel 18:10-14 (NKJV) And it happened on the next day that the distressing spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied inside the house. So David played music with his hand, as at other times; but there was a spear in Saul's hand. 11 And Saul cast the spear, for he said, “I will pin David to the wall!” But David escaped his presence twice. 12 Now Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, but had departed from Saul. 13 Therefore Saul removed him from his presence, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people. 14 And David behaved wisely in all his ways,

This is second time Scripture mentions, "David behaved wisely." I get the picture that David did not grow up being a bratty little sibling. Or, maybe he was, but his brothers made sure he didn't get by with it for long. They straightened him out and didn't put up with the bratty behavior. Even with David being anointed by Samuel as the next king, going to serve Saul to remove the distressing spirit, killing the lion and the bear, taking food to his brothers serving in the army, killing Goliath - which made a way for his father's family to never have to pay taxes, taken in my the king's son Johnathan who would train him in combat, placed over the men of war and now captain over a thousand, David remained true in his character. He behaved wisely, not just once or once in a while. He behaved wisely in all his ways. That is something to acknowledge.

I do not know as an older teen or youth, that shortly thereafter it could be written of me in Scripture that I behaved wisely. But is is written about David, not just once, but twice. This causes me to reflect on myself. We do not want to come under condemnation on another's achievements. We want to read Scripture and learn. We want to acknowledge and congratulate people for their successes. It is important to celebrate others, but also to know what pleases God. It is not our perfection, but our heart to serve God, though whatever door He opens for us. Is it important today to ask, "Why is David being recognized again for behaving wisely?"

I ask the question, because it is my heart's desire to behave wisely. David hadn't done anything wrong. Saul was the one with the issue. There are times when we have an issue and we need to repent and make things right, then go on living in the corrected behavior, mindset and path. However, today, David is being acknowledged for behaving wisely, because he submitted under Saul. He did this even when he knew the Lord was no longer with Saul. He did this knowing the Lord was with him. He did this when he knew he was the next king of Israel. He did this knowing he was the one who killed Goliath, killed the ten thousands, was over the men and war and captain of a thousand. He still behaved wisely.

One of the reasons I think David was able to behave wisely is because he completely:

  • Trusted God would be true to His Word,

  • Trusted God to open doors in their time,

  • Trusted God to protect him,

  • Trusted God to position him in situations that would teach him what he needed for his future.

Therefore, he still needed God. He would always need God. But, we can get to a point where we stop learning. We think we can handle it ourselves without asking God. We think every situation is the same, so we move forward without seeking God. Sadly, later in life David will get to this point; however, he will quickly realize his sin and make things right with God. This is why it is written of David and him alone, "He is a man after God's own heart." It isn't that he didn't make mistakes. He was teachable when someone or when God revealed his sin. He would repent and plead for mercy for those his decision had caused hard times, even death.

In this time, as he served under Saul, he behaved wisely.

Do you trust God to be true to His Word?

Do you trust God to open doors at the right time?

Do you trust God to protect you?

Do you trust God to put you in positions you still need to learn for your future?

Father, I come before You now. I have not forgotten what You have told me I would do. I know You Word is true. I trust You to open the doors. I trust You to protect me as I move forward into doing what I have been asked to do. I trust You to place me in positions that will teach what I need to learn so I am ready for the future You have for me. I will walk in the fullness of who You say I am to be. I will serve others as if I am serving You. I will not engage in the comparison game. I will honor others for the position You have given them. I will serve the Lord with all my heart, with all my mind and with all my soul. That means I will serve those You have placed me under. I will behave wisely in Jesus' name amen.
