Oh, Brother!

Warriors Arise: November 8, 2023

Matthew 5:22-23 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

Oh, brother! This is a big deal and very difficult to do. God doesn't want us to get things mixed up. When we have a relationship that is out-of-sorts, we are to go work things out. Once things have been worked out them we return to the Lord and it is a true celebration.

Why is this so hard? I think we all understand what God is saying. He desires His people, His children to get along. If there is a breach in a relationship, we are to go and work it out. We are to listen and communicate clearly. We are to forgive and be forgiven.

When we are reconciled one to another then we can return to God and our gift at the altar will be well received. Jesus states this and then makes sure we understand what He is saying by restarting it.

It is a big deal to God for us to be reconciled to our brothers, all family members and friends. There comes a time when we are to pray for our enemies. Just like every parent wants their children to get along, God wants His children to get along. He wants us to support, encourage, and strengthen each other.

As believer's, we represent God. Jesus wants us to understand our first gift to God needs to be making sure our relationships are honoring.

  • It is easier to serve in a position within the church than to work things out with our brothers.

  • It is easier to give money in the offering plate than to make things right with our brothers.

  • It is easier to worship the Lord than to work through a conflict with our brothers.

However,

  • God doesn't want our service if we are not reconciled to our brothers.

  • God doesn't want our money if we are unwilling to make things right with our brothers.

  • God doesn't want our worship when our heart is filled with malice and conflict toward our brother.

We are responsible for going to listen, forgive, be forgiven and reconciled to our brothers.

Father, I ask for You to give me courage to go to the people You have laid upon my heart. I pray I would be prepared to listen. I pray I would forgive and receive their forgiveness. I pray I would work through this conflict to be reconciled to my brothers in Jesus' name amen.
