On the Run

Warriors Arise: October 19, 2022

1 Samuel 19:18 (NKJV) So David fled and escaped, and went to Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and stayed in Naioth.

According to my study Bible, Ramah was about an hours walk from where David was to find Samuel. In my mind, that doesn't seem far enough; however, it wasn't about where he should go, it was who he needed to see. He needed to see Samuel, and he was in Ramah. As much as David might want to go much further, he had to see Samuel. David needed answers. He didn't know who he could trust. He didn't know who would know what he needed to do. He needed the prophet of the land. He needed the judge. He needed direction from Samuel.

David shared everything Saul had done to him. Then they decided they had better get somewhere else. Where could they go?

My study Bible says Naioth is not necessarily a place but a thing, it is a tent or a camp of tents for shepherds. Where would David be accepted? In the place he began. David's family responsibility as a child through developing into a ruddy youth, was as a shepherd to his father's sheep. He would know Naioth. This would be familiar territory and some familiar friends he had made when growing up.

When we are on the run, we may not make the best decisions. I am sure it was good to share with Samuel. David needed to make sure Samuel still believed what he had done years earlier. Did Samuel still believe David would be the next king? If so, how would he stay alive with the current king trying to kill him or get him killed? What was he supposed to do now that he was a member of the king's family? He is married. Can he return and get his wife? Will she come? Would it put her in danger to retrieve her? What about his future? What about all God said would happen? Is this God's plan? I imagine so many questions. David was human. He would have been wondering how God was going to get him to the fulfillment of what Samuel had prophesied with the king trying to kill him or have him killed.

He was on the run. What could he do? What had he done? Why was this happening to him? When we have all these questions consuming our thoughts it is difficult to hear God. David had to run to someone who wasn't involved anymore, but who he could trust to seek God and hear from Him. He ran to Samuel, the one who gave him hope to believe that life would be different for him one day. He ran to Samuel, because who else believed in God's call on his life. He ran to Samuel because he knew he needed someone who sought God for answers. Do you have someone like that in your life? Do you have someone you can run to when life gets so out of hand that it is beyond your control, nothing you do seems to make a difference, and no one can protect you or make sense of what is happening?

Father, I pray we would be people who represent You well. I pray we would be prepared to receive those who are on the run. I pray we would listen to what they are saying. I pray we would be slow to action and seek You on their behalf. I pray we would watch Your hand of protection come. I pray we would position ourselves in the place we begin with You. I pray we would find You in the midst of the chaos. I desire to position myself before You. I want to hear Your voice, know what You say to do, and have the courage to do it. I pray I would seek You and put all chaos aside. I ask for You to speak to me and I will align my actions with what you have said in Jesus name amen.
