Warriors Arise: September 21, 2023
Matthew 5:2 Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
I find it odd Matthew prefaced "and taught them" with "then He opened His mouth". Why would He say it that way? Generally, when we are being taught, someone has opened their mouth. I wonder if Matthew is trying to intensify a point?
If the people were coming quickly; one right after another, without a break, then there wasn't time to teach the people. When they were healed and had watched enough of the miracles others were receiving then they would go on home. They maybe didn't even have a conversation if Jesus. He touched to heal the people or spoke to the demons and dismissed them. From what Matthew records, there doesn't seem to be time for teaching.
People were hurting, broken, diseased, demon-possessed, lame, etc. They needed their needs met. They didn't travel all over the countryside to hear a message. They wanted healed, delivered and made whole. But Jesus was moved to make the time to teach the people of the love of the Father.
Sometimes a person can be so desperate they don't care who is releasing them from their affliction or even how they can do it, they just know they can so they let them do it. But Jesus wanted them to know who was healing them. Jesus wanted them to know why they were being delivered. Jesus wanted them to His Father.
Psalms 103:7 He made known His ways to Moses,
His acts to the children of Israel.
Something had to be different. Jesus didn't want just one person or His twelve disciple to be the only ones who knew the ways of God. All of these people coming to receive their healing, be delivered from their demons and made whole by the touch of God through Jesus, the Messiah, needed to embrace knowing the ways of God and not just His acts.
This happens more than we know. God continues to do the miraculous. Many times because we don't know God's ways, we don't recognize His acts. They happen, but because we don't know God, we label them as good karma or the alignment to the stars when it is the God of heaven demonstrating His love, desiring for us to know Him.
Father, I pray I would notice You and the miraculous You do in my life. I do not want to take for granted what You are doing in my life. I do not want to give credit to another. I pray my eyes would be open and my heart would recognize the demonstration of Your love. I want to hear You, know You and commune with You. Teach me Your ways, in Jesus' name amen.
