Isaiah 9:6-7 (NKJV)
For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
Which part of Biblical history do you consider to be Jesus' most powerful demonstrate of being the Prince of Peace? There are two that pop out instantaneously. Runner up in my book would be in the book of Mark. How many of you can sleep in a storm? I love it when I am sleeping and it rains. I sleep so soundly. It is great! However, I am inside, with a roof over my head, and warm blankets nestled under my chin. But Jesus was on a boat, which was on the open sea; and wet probably doesn't even begin to describe the scene. He had to be soaked! How could He sleep?
Mark 4:35-41 (NKJV) On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
He could sleep because He was at perfect peace. God told Him and He told the disciples, "Let us cross over to the other side." It doesn't matter how many legions of demons are battling to keep you from going where God told you to go. They do not have the power of the Prince of Peace. You see, on the other side of the sea was the demoniac. God was sending Jesus to free this man from a legion of demons. Of course, they were trying to stop Jesus from coming. And why not attack Jesus when He was sleeping. The enemy always wants to catch us off guard, especially if we have been lulled to sleep. Jesus, was asleep, but He was not bothered. He was and demonstrated the very essence of peace, the peace that surpasses all understanding (Phil 4:7). He could sleep and not be bothered because He was a peace with the plans God had for Him. When the disciple woke Him up and were frantic in fear, He did not receive their fear. He spoke to the winds and rebuked the waves. Then addressed the fear within His disciples. I am amazed at what happened when the Prince of Peace spoke.
However, what takes number 1 in my mind is when Jesus' body was already in distress, sweating drops of blood and Judas comes to betray Him with a kiss. What was about to happen was already settled in Jesus' mind. The 12 hours prior to Jesus' death on the cross is an attack upon Jesus' mentally, physically and emotionally.
His soul is anguished and He is bleeding drops of blood as the hour of His crucifixion approaches.
Judas betrays Him. He doesn't lose His cool with His betrayer, the one He has given 3 years of opportunity to know Him, God and the power of Salvation.
Jesus willingly goes. He even heals one who has come to take Him. They knew who He is. They asked and He responded, "I AM". The power in those words cause them to back up and fall to the ground. Jesus didn't make a run for it. He remained standing. He demonstrated peace in His purpose, His calling, and the timing of the Father.
He appeared before the Sanhedrin. They covered His face and beat Him, "Prophesy who hit you!" They mocked. Yes, did not lose His cool. They challenged His purpose and He remained calm.
The soldiers whipped Jesus with the cat of nine tails, hammered a crown of thorns on His head and threw a purple cloth over His shoulders. Then mocked Him as the King of the Jews. Yet, He still did not respond or call out to the angels to defend Him.
Pilot told Him, "Don't know I have the power of life and death?" But Jesus did not laugh. I think I would have at least let out a mocking laugh; but not the Prince of Peace.
Jesus hung on the cross humiliated that they had taken His clothes and He demonstrated perfectly peace.
Jesus called out to His Father, feeling the abandonment of the One who sent Him and still He displayed peace as He gave up His spirit.
So much happened in those few hours! I am in awe of Jesus, my Prince of Peace. I look forward to celebrating the birth of my Jesus, the Prince of Peace. His birthday is so much more than giving gifts and coming together to see family and friends. Even as a Christian, I am challenged. Have shared with my kids the meaning behind Christmas but what am I really doing? Is the day really about Your Son or meeting the needs and expectations of others? The reason to come together is good but when we come together it isn't about celebrating the birthday of Jesus, the Prince of Peace.
Father, I celebrate Jesus as my Prince of Peace. He leads by example. He demonstrates peace when fear is all around. He stands before those who betrayed Him, the lies and accusations and challenges to demonstrate who He is but He didn't. He didn't act on His own. He displayed perfect peace. How can I celebrate Your birth when it seems like all I am doing is meeting the needs of others? There should be a time when we get together with family and it should be sacred, guarded, and nurtured. I wonder if we should even get together on Christmas or just spend Christmas with You. Your grace is overwhelming. You delight in people gathering for Christmas. You desire families to be strengthened as they gather. I pray I would take some time on Christmas to celebrate the birth of Jesus, time totally dedicated to Jesus, the Prince of Peace. I will m meet with You on Your birthday in Jesus' name amen!
