Play Your Cards Right

Warriors Arise: August 24, 2022

1 Samuel 18:5a (NKJV) So David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved wisely.

David was in a situation and he needed to play his cards right. He couldn't have anyone who knew what Samuel had done, say anything to Saul or Jonathan. Samuel had anointed David to be the next king of Israel. How awkward would that be to have Saul's son make a convent with you, knowing that one day you would be taking what was customarily his? What was going through David's mind?

Obviously, he was taking captive every thought and bringing it to the obedience of the Lord. He would not press his position or the position Samuel had anointed him to serve. David could not tell anyone he was anointed king. He could not walk in arrogant pride or have haughty eyes of greed. He could not betray Jonathan. He had to make himself trust the Lord and His timing. He must take every thought captive and bring it to the obedience of God. If he did have any thought of taking the kingdom through betrayal, he had to stop the thought and make himself trust God's way and His timing.

2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (NKJV) For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

David needed to play his cards right. He didn't need any to know he was anointed king. He needed to wait upon the Lord. He needed to humble himself in the sight of the Lord and under a king, who did not honor God above the people he led.

1 Peter 5:6-7 (NKJV) Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

David did whatever Saul told him to do. He went were Saul told him to go. Scripture says, David behaved wisely. Therefore, he must have humbled himself before God. He trusted God to exalt him in due time. David knew God cared for him. We tend to get ahead of God's timing when we forget how much God cares for us. When God makes a promise, He will fulfill His Word.

Numbers 23:19 (NKJV)

“God is not a man, that He should lie,

Nor a son of man, that He should repent.

Has He said, and will He not do?

Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

The cards David chose to play, were to trust God. He knew God cared for him. He chose to play another card. He would honor Saul and make a binding covenant with Jonathan. He would do exactly what they said. He would leave the things of God in His hands and do what He could do which was to honor the leadership above him. He would not take it from them. He behaved wisely. He did not flaunt around his anointing. He did not do his own thing. He did not speak poorly of Saul. He did not undermine his authority. He did not question his leadership. He did not make his own plans. He did not undermine his authority. He did whatever Saul told him to do. He behaved wisely. He trusted God and his timing. These were the cards he played.

Father, there are things you have spoke into my being. While I wait for those to come to fruition, I will be faithful to the authority You have placed over me. I will make covenant with those who have chosen to teach me. I choose to honor and not undermine. I choose to do what I am told to do and not come up with my own plans. I choose to behave wisely. I will wait upon You to fulfill Your word to me. I will serve those You have placed to lead me. I will humble myself as I take captive any thought that would set itself against Your plan or its timing. You are my God and I will be faithful to You. You will fulfill Your Word to me. I will trust in You and Your timing in Jesus' name amen.
