Poor No More

Warriors Arise: December 10, 2021

Isaiah 61:1-3 (NKJV) “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, 3 To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”

When Scripture says the Lord has anointed Me, it means Jesus has been given authority to. When Jesus does come a couple hundred yers later, He preaches good news to the poor. Keep in mind poor does not mean the didn't have any money. It doesn't mean the homeless. Strong's defines them as the are depressed in mind or circumstances. They are discouraged, even heavy burdened. Things in life seem to be piling up and there doesn't seem to be any reprieve. When we do not see a way out, discouragement can set in. Discouragement can suck the life out of our faith like a balloon that is popped. Only by the miraculous touch of God can the ballon be put back together and His breath begin to build our faith.

I never wanted to identify with the poor, because I thought that meant I always had to live in poverty. But it doesn't mean that at all. Matthew doesn't say poor in finances will receive the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:3 (NKJV)

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,

For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

One of the definitions Strong's gives for spirit in the above reference is breath and disposition. Those who are poor in spirit need a breath from God. When they receive the breath from God their disposition is altered, because they receive ownership of what God has given them, "for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." The next chapter in Matthew, Jesus teaches the disciples how to pray, "as it is in heaven, let it be on earth." Our disposition changes when we receive the breath of God, and apply it to the very issue that sucking the life out of us. When Jesus teaches in the synagogues, temples, in the cities and throughout the countryside, He is breathing the life of God's truth to all the people. For those who will believe, it is as if they are taking a breath from heaven and receive new life in the discouraging situation. There is good news in everything Jesus taught. He wanted all the people to be free in their mind, so they could believe with their heart the truth of God's love.

God took the personal touch by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the Savior of the world, for each one to have the opportunity to enter into relationship with Him. The good tidings Jesus shared were for the poor, those discouraged and their disposition was hopeless to know hope and live a victorious and full of life.

Father, I look forward to celebrating the birth of Your Son, the personal touch You took to share the good news that removes discouragement from my life is empowering. Jesus came to teach what You knew we needed to be rich in spirit, live courageously, and share Your perfect love. I will celebrate the birthday of my Lord, the One who is continues to cause His Word to give me life every time I read it. I am poor no more, in Jesus name amen.
