Matthew 8:5-10 Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.”
And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”
The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!
The centurion was fully convinced Jesus could heal his servant. He had no doubt. He had all kinds of worries each day but he was a problem solver. If he didn't have an answer, he knew where to go to get the answer. How can I say this?
I can say this because he stepped across all kind of lines when he approached Jesus to solve the problem. The differences didn't matter. What mattered is that he knew what Jesus couldn't do; therefore, he humbled himself to approach Jesus. He, a Roman, getting help from Jesus, a Jew. Romans took from the Jews and used the Jews but they didn't humble themselves before the Jews.
Do you think it could be a matter of humbling ourselves? Or could it be that we are willing to settle for less because we do not want to bother Jesus. This centurion knew what Jesus could do. He fully acknowledged Jesus' authority. He recognized Jesus could do something he couldn't do.
No matter the cultural obstacles, he went to Jesus for the answer. He spoke to Jesus in a way no one had honored Him before. The priests were constantly asked Jesus where He got His authority to say and do such things. But the centurion, recognized the authority and honored it, in Him.
My Father in heaven hallowed be Your Name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. I come before You today, humbling myself. There is no need for me to suffer or for those around me to suffer when You have the answer. Forgive me for not coming to You sooner. Forgive me for holding on to the hardship without approaching You. Forgive me to not approaching You for who is needed in my life and those around. I will humble myself and seek You. I will make my request known. You are my God. I know what You can do. I will ask in Jesus' Name, amen.
