Warriors Arise: September 5, 2023
Matthew 4:16-17 The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Let's look at how verse sixteen relates to verse seventeen. Isaiah is talking about people who have sat in darkness and the Light has dawned. Jesus is preaching, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Sin keeps us in darkness. Matter-of-fact, sin deceives us into thinking we are in the light when we could be complete in darkness while using the light from a lengthy distance away. We must ask ourselves, "Am I in the Light or using the light from a lengthy distance away?"
Just because we can see the light doesn't mean we are in the light.
Just because we know Jesus cleanses us from our sin doesn't mean we have asked Jesus to cleanse us from our sin.
Just because we have confessed our sin, doesn't mean we have turned away from it.
Repent means to turn away from sin and turn toward righteousness. The Hebrews had been thinking they were in the light when they were in darkness looking to the heavens for a sign, Old Testament scrolls for insight, and creating religious laws to obtain righteousness. They needed to be in the Light.
The only way to be in the light is to be under the Light. Jesus is the umbrella of our Salvation. He alone has atoned for our sin and cleaned us from all righteousness. Through repentance we surrender our life of sin and selfish living to embrace Jesus has our Savior and honor Him has our Lord.
These two verses are linked because they identify where the people are, in darkness, and Jesus tells them how they can come out and into His Light.
Father, You linked the Old and New Testament through the prophetic words of Isaiah and the life and purpose of Christ. I receive Jesus Christ as the Light of the world and the Light of my life. I desire to walk under His light. I want to walk according to the leading of the righteousness of Christ and there fullness of His authority, wisdom, knowledge and love. I ask for You to make me aware when I have started to walk out from under the light of Christ. I do not want to be decieived into thinking I am in the Light when I am actually in darkness. I pray I would be quick to repent and return to the Light in Jesus' name amen.
