Something Went Entirely Wrong

Warriors Arise: April 3, 2024

Matthew 8: 22 & 23 Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves.

We all like to trick ourselves into believing that when we follow Jesus so completely, innocently, and readily everything is going to go perfect. We want to believe because we are walking in the very footprints of Jesus nothing will go wrong. Well, something went entirely wrong!

They followed Jesus into the boat and suddenly a great tempest around on the sea. This tempest caused the boat to be covered with waves. I bet the disciples that turned away were watching this from the shore and congratulating themselves. Can't you hear them saying, "Look at them! They are going to die! I am so glad I didn't get in that boat. I am glad I am headed back to my dad's. I made the right decision. He almost had me convinced I was supposed to go with them. I'm so glad I didn't give my all. I wasn't ready to give my life!"

Nowhere in the Bible does it say when you become a follower of Jesus Christ and make Him your Savior and Lord, everything in life will be without trouble. The Bible says it rains on the wicked and the righteous. Most likely, there were others on the sea that day. They were caught in the same tempest.

The storm was in opposition to what Jesus was going to the other side to do. There were so many lessons to learn. Today, lets learn two things:

  1. Just because we follow Jesus doesn't mean life will be without troubles.

  2. Just because we follow Jesus doesn't mean life will be all troubles.

We must learn to stay away from thinking in the extremes. We want to be at the plum line. Therefore, let's go ahead and learn one more lesson. No matter if we follow Jesus or not, there will be very good days and there will be days when things are entirely wrong. But when we follow Jesus and the trouble comes, He will be in the boat with us.

My Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Forgive me for thinking life will always be easy, a walk in the park. That kind of thinking gets me discouraged and leads me to depression when trouble comes. Forgive me for thinking life will always be one disaster after another. That is devastating to my faith. I cannot believe for You to rescue me or for You to lead me out of the trauma if I believe there will be more trouble coming. My faith is built upon seeing you with me through each trouble. I am stronger because I know You are with me. I know You will lead me out and lift me up onto higher ground. You will not allow devastating circumstances to overwhelm me. I will follow You out of the yuck and walk in confidence knowing You are with me no matter when the rain falls or the sun shines. I trust You in Jesus' Name, amen.
