1 Chronicles 16:7-15 (NKJV) 7 On that day David first delivered this psalm into the hand of Asaph and his brethren, to thank the Lord:
8 Oh, give thanks to the Lord!
Call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples!
9 Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him;
Talk of all His wondrous works!
10 Glory in His holy name;
Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord!
11 Seek the Lord and His strength;
Seek His face evermore!
12 Remember His marvelous works which He has done,
His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth,
13 O seed of Israel His servant,
You children of Jacob, His chosen ones!
14 He is the Lord our God;
His judgments are in all the earth.
15 Remember His covenant forever,
The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations
David ties the knot. Why remember the covenant? Why remember the words God has commanded? For those who remember the covenant and follow the word of God's command will be blessed for a thousand generations. Where did David get this idea?
When he was researching and pursuing God to find out how to bring the ark of God to the city, back to the tabernacle tent, he most likely read Deuteronomy 28. God has says his blessings will go to a thousand generations. David then proclaims over the people and exhorts them to embrace a covenant with God forever. My mind cannot comprehend a thousand generations. Maybe at the end of the thousand generations the Lord will return. If so, we have a long way to go. Let's hope we do not have to start the thousand generations of blessing and keep it going until the Lord returns. I pray the blood of Jesus is the bridge over the generations who embraced rebellion and invoked curses upon themselves to their 3 and 4 generations.
David puts before them to make a personal covenant with God. Have you made a covenant with God? Specifically, David encourages them to make a covenant to follow God's commands. Have you made a covenant to follow God's commands? As you are choosing to follow God and honor Him with your life? Do you bless the generations to come? Do you bless the generations to also follow God with all their heart, with all their soul, with all their mind, and with all their strength?
We can get into a mindset of praying for the next generation to make the commitment while at the same time we step away from God's commands and the covenant He desires to make with us. The Lord, He is good. He desires you and I to make a covenant, a commitment to follow His commands and to follow Him. It isn't about the do's and don'ts. It is about relationship. It is so hard to follow rules when there is no relationship. It is so difficult to stay committed to someone when life has become a list of things that have to be done, over being in relationship with them. God isn't all about the do's. He wants to relate. When we build relationship with God then the do's are done from a heart of love, a connection, a cord that cannot be broken. When we get tired of the do's and don'ts there is generally a relationship problem.
Father, I desire our relationship to be healthy and thriving. I am grateful for all You have done to invite me into a more secure relationship with You. Daily, I want to live my life to serve You. I want to hear Your voice, see You demonstrating Your love to people, and joining You. I want Your heart for Your people. I pray for the fullness of Your love to flow through me and reach into the lives of others. I want each one to know the love and the freedom You offer. I commit to You to walk according to Your will and not my own. I make a covenant with You today to walk in alignment with Your word and the calling You have upon my life. I will not shrink back. I will draw upon You for the strength, wisdom, resources, compassion and love to reach the broken and set the captives free. You are my God and I will walk with You all the days of my life in Jesus' name amen.
