Psalm 23: 4a (NKJV) Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I can't imagine being David when he was standing before Saul (1 Sam. 16:21). Totally wondering if King Saul knews about Samuel coming to anoint him as the next king of Israel. Then having heard how Saul went into these fits of rage, when the tormenting spirit came upon him. If he knew, then David may have been walking to his death.
We have watched documentaries, read stories, or seen a movie where someone was given promise and it was that promise that kept them alive. They pushed through all kinds of adversities, even faced death from starvation or captivity, and the promise they had been given kept their focus on staying alive.
Read a little more of Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me. If David didn't know before he was summoned to Saul, he probably heard about the tormenting spirit on the way to the meet him. How could he not be sweating bullets as he stood before Saul? Even if Saul didn't know about Samuel anointing him as the next king, he still could be in danger.
Have you been in a situation where you were summoned to go to the principals office and didn't know why? Maybe your boss asked to speak to you in their office and when you walked in they said to close the door behind you. You had no idea what you were walking into, but people didn't go to the principal's office unless they were in trouble and the boss never called people into their office unless they had to confront a problem. This just might cause one to sweat bullets.
David had been in the valley of the shadow of death so many times throughout his life. Those situations can cause one to really press into God. I wonder if the next 10 words are what gave David the strength to go before Saul, "I will fear no evil; for You are with me".
When you are faced with a situation that seems like you are walking through the valley of the shadow of death do you remember the Lord Your God? When fear seems to be haunting you with doom, detection or death, do you remember God is with you? Do you say to your mind, "I will fear no evil; for my God is with me"? Do you say to yourself, "I am God's and He is with me, who can be against me"? Do you stir yourself up by way of reminder that the Word of the Lord will not return void?
To be one who is anxious for nothing doesn't mean we are not in situations where fear wants to rear its vicious head and threaten us. To be one who is anxious for nothing, means we will not allow the tormenting thoughts to become our belief. When tormenting thoughts become our more powerful than the words of God about us, then we are anxious and afraid. The only way to battle anxiety and fear is to remind ourselves, "I will fear no evil; for my God is with me." There is no problem admitting we are faced with a rough situation that makes it seem like we are walking through the valley of the shadow of death, but we must remember the next part. We must declare the truth in the face of what is causing the fear, "I will fear no evil; for my God is with me." We must tell ourselves, "I will fear no evil; for my God is with me." We must strengthen ourselves in the Lord our God. He is with us. He does not say, "Wow, that looks scary, I will meet you on the other side when you come out. I am not going into that dark place, the valley of death. If you make it through, I will be there waiting on you." That is not what God says. He says, He will never leave you nor forsake you. God is faithful to be with us. We need to be faithful to believe He is with us. We are not to be overcome with darkness or fear. We have the light of Christ within us. We have the power of Christ within us. We never are in a position of facing stressful situations alone. God is with us. Those who remember God is with them, will fear no evil.
Father, there is not reason for me to be anxious. You are with me. There is no reason to fear because I have Christ, the hope of glory within me. There is no reason to fear the darkness, because You will fight my battles. Your rod and staff aren't to hurt me; they are to protect me. They are to fight my enemies. I pray for You to guide me and protect me. I will go, where you say to go. I will stand in the presence of fear and know You are with me. I will not be overcome with anxiety because I know You are working things out in my favor. I will not be listening to the voice of fear when the voice of truth has already spoke over my destiny. I will step into Your love and trust You to act on my behalf. I will stir up the faith You given me because You have created me with a purpose and I will fulfill it in Jesus' name amen.
