Warriors Arise: July 19, 2022
1 Samuel 17:40-42 (NKJV) Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine. 41 So the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him. 42 And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was only a youth, ruddy and good-looking.
Have you ever felt the eyes of someone look you up and down? How do you respond in situation where you feel looked upon with judgement? Obviously, the Philistine had no love for the Israelites. He was there to take away what God had given them. When he looked upon David, he disdained him.
Disdain - the feeling that someone or something is unworthy of one's consideration or respect. (Webster's Dictionary)
The Philistine definitely considered David unworthy to be on the battlefield with him. He recognized the same thing everyone else did. He was young, ruddy, and good looking, but he definitely wasn't a warrior. He wasn't the champion he had hoped to be fighting. He wanted a fight. He wasn't someone he could kill and gloat over, but this was a kid. What glory is there in fighting a kid.
David was already disgusted with this Philistine. He had heard enough from him. It is why he was so compelled to fight. David has disdain toward the Philistine not because of what he looked like, but because of what he heard come out of his mouth. He had blasphemed God and that was enough. In David's mind, it was the Philitine who was unworthy to be on their land, calling for a fight. Who did this Philistine think he was, anyway? In David's mind, this had nothing to do with him. It had everything to do with God. That is why it didn't phase him what the Philistine thought of him. David made sure the Philistine knows God is going to deal with him.
There are times it really doesn't matter what someone thinks of you, how they size you up, nor the lack of value they place upon you. What matters is the issue at hand. How does God want this issue resolved? In this particular situation, the Philistine was not going to live another day and the Israelites were going to chase down the Philistines, collect what they left behind and reclaim their land.
It doesn't matter what people think. What matters is what God wants to happen. He wants to give you the opportunity to remove the threat, stand your ground against the enemy, chase the enemy away, collect the spoils and reclaim the land God has given you. We put too much value on what the enemy thinks of us. Why does it matter? You are enemies. You are not friends. He doesn't like you. You have no need to desire him to like you. This isn't going to end with a peace treaty. Either the enemy has to go down or he will take you down. Again, you are not friends with the enemy. He is only out to steal from you.
Father, I am who You created me to be. I will embrace what You have for me to do. I will not make friends with the enemy. I will not give value to what he thinks about me. I embrace the thoughts You have toward me. I will take a stand against the enemy. I will not be concerned with what he thinks of me. I will remind myself what You think of me. I will remember what we have done together. I will give no value to the enemy's disdain toward me. I will stand my ground and fight for the freedom of my family, friends and the promises You have given me in Jesus' name amen.
